MICRO HYDRO POWER FOR SUSTAINABLE PEOPLE
WWF Bukit Barisan Selatan Program (WWF-BBS) has successfully built 8 micro-hydro plants that can supply 50 KwH of energy for 129 households. The construction was done in collaboration with Sukabanjar village community and funded by Toyota Japan. Shinichi Kawae as a representative of WWF-Japan staff in this activity said that Toyota's involvement can help the preservation of forests and wildlife in Indonesia through improving the lives of people around the forest.
"Toyota's contribution in this cooperation is in the form of providing funding assistance of Rp 300,000,000.- (three hundred million rupiah)" said Shinichi. "WWF-BBS hopes that Toyota's involvement through WWF-Japan will continue in order to save the forest which is for many wildlife in it".
On the other hand, WWF-BBS staff in the livelihood sustainable development division, Sujarwo, said that the Sukabanjar community hopes to utilize the existing river to improve their quality of life with the micro-hydro. This is also in accordance with their goal of being able to maintain the existing forest (water catchment area). The existence of this tool makes the community benefit directly from river flow, one of which is lighting in their homes.
Head of Pekon Sukabanjar, Jamhuri, said that the community is very enthusiastic to cooperate in the process of micro-hydro development ranging from making reservoirs to regular routine maintenance. He hopes that the community can maintain the existing forest and nature so that it can bring good benefits to life through this program.
