STRENGTHENING FISHERIES MANAGEMENT IN DERAWAN ISLANDS THROUGH EAFM APPROACH
The great potential of marine and fisheries owned by the Derawan Islands Coastal and Small Islands Conservation Area (KKP3K) and its Surrounding Waters (KDPS) is of interest and concern to many people. This encourages increased market demand and has the potential to result in uncontrolled utilization of fisheries resources which leads to habitat destruction. If left unchecked, it is possible that marine and fisheries resources in the Derawan Islands will decline dramatically, this can be seen from the EAFM assessment report in KKP3K KDPS in 2021, there was an increase in the number of boats where previously in 2015 there were 810 boat units to 1. 029 units in 2020, the previous catch production was 1,647.13 tons / year and now has decreased by 827.25 tons / year, and the total fishing capacity was previously 352,222,279.20 tons / trip-year / unit and now has decreased by 224,728,512.62 tons / trip-year / unit.
From these data, it could be that for the next few years, marine and fisheries resources will no longer be enjoyed by the next generation. Therefore, the need for integration between stakeholders or partners in the management of marine and fisheries resources in the Derawan Islands is something that is absolutely necessary for the optimization of management.
The establishment of the KKP3K KDPS through the Decree of the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the Republic of Indonesia No. 87 of 2016 is one form of management in protecting existing resources. Management with an integrated approach that includes aspects of resources and ecosystems and social aspects wrapped in the right fisheries policy is also very necessary at this time. One approach that can be done is to use the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management. This approach is oriented towards sustainable fisheries management that leads to a balance of ecosystem sustainability, community welfare and integrated governance or institutions.
WWF-Indonesia with the support of the European Union (EU) Ocean Governance Project is currently implementing the FIP (Fisheries Improvement Program) program, one of which supports the EAFM study in KKP3K KDPS in collaboration with the East Kalimantan Maritime and Fisheries Service and Mulawarman University Samarinda from March to June 2021.
The results of the EAFM study were then disseminated in April 2022 online through a zoom meeting, attended by 41 participants from several stakeholders and strategic partners in KDPS in collaboration with the East Kalimantan Provincial Marine and Fisheries Service, Berau Regency Fisheries Service, and Pontianak Coastal and Marine Resource Management Center (BPSPL).
