PANDA MOBILE & HSBC VOLUNTEERS ENCOURAGE LENTENG AGUNG RESIDENTS TO SAVE WATER AND PRESERVE THE RIVER
More than 71% of the Earth's surface is covered by water. 97% of this water is seawater and less than 3% is freshwater. Of the world's freshwater, more than 70% is in the form of perennial snow, polar ice and glaciers. About 30% of the world's fresh water is stored deep underground. Only 1% is surface water that can be used easily. This is in the form of ground surface water, river water, lake water, and swamps.
These facts moved PT Bank HSBC Indonesia and WWF-Indonesia to continue the cooperation program in providing water education to the public. One of the activities carried out was water education by WWF-Indonesia's Panda Mobile and HSBC volunteers on Saturday (22/09) at the Lenteng Agung Child Friendly Open Public Space (RPTRA). Panda Mobile and HSBC volunteers invited residents around Lenteng Agung Park to be wise in using water and keeping the watershed environment sustainable.
That morning after the morning gymnastics activity, many mothers were so enthusiastic about participating in the activities held at the Lenteng Agung RPTRA. The activity began by providing facts about water on Earth. Not a few of them were surprised to find out that the water that can be consumed is only 3%.
Next, there was a guessing session about the use of water in everyday life, such as preparing eggs, corn, flushing toilets, and washing cars. One of the interesting things about this activity was when the women who participated in the morning activity competed with each other to guess how much water was used in the activity. For example, when one of the participants guessed that the production process from planting corn to preparing it for the dinner table required 1,000 liters of water, it turned out that the process of preparing corn required 900 liters of water. Suddenly the woman felt disappointed because her guess was wrong, but also invited laughter because the atmosphere of the game became so fun. This session is considered important to do so that people start thinking about the use of water in daily activities. The activity carried out by Panda Mobile with HSBC volunteers was full of information, although delivered in a light and relaxed way, so that people know the importance of saving existing water sources.
The activity continued with information about the types of waste, one of which is plastic waste. One of the HSBC volunteers appealed to the women at the venue, "By bringing our own drink containers, it means we have contributed to reducing plastic waste." The appeal was well received by the participants of the morning activity carefully.
The participants were also invited to watch a movie about the importance of protecting water, which tells the story of the dangers of littering into the river. The movie was watched by children around the RPTRA park. Children and parents who participated in the activity got the message to always keep the environment sustainable, one of which is by not throwing garbage into the river body.
In addition, the children were invited to play "Sumatran Tiger" and "Water for Elephant" snakes and ladders. While playing cricket, they got information about the characteristics of the Sumatran Tiger. Not only that, they also learned about the threats and challenges that elephants face when exploring the forest, ranging from illegal logging to meeting poachers who threaten their lives in the "Water for Elephant" snakes and ladders game.
