EARTH HOUR INDONESIA CAMPAIGN: COMMEMORATE WASTE AWARENESS DAY WITH SIMULTANEOUS COLLABORATIONS IN 23 CITIES
Jakarta -- Today (23/2), WWF-Indonesia together with the EARTH HOUR Community carried out EARTH HOUR Indonesia Campaign activities in commemoration of Waste Awareness Day, through the declaration of an action called SERENTAKSI COLLABORATION: "This is my action! Where is your action?". The declaration of this action was carried out in the Jakarta Car Free Day area, and took place simultaneously in 23 cities supporting the EARTH HOUR Indonesia Campaign.
The National Waste Awareness Day that falls on February 21 reminds us of the recent floods experienced in many cities. Although caused by extreme weather and storms, in a way, flooding is also a result of poor waste management. Therefore, the National Waste Awareness Day is the right momentum to invite people to start a more environmentally friendly lifestyle.
""Plastic without us realizing it has become a routine part of our daily lives, but people are still unaware of the impact of excessive plastic use,"" said Nyoman Iswarayoga, Director of Communication and Advocacy of WWF-Indonesia. "Besides being difficult to decompose naturally, plastic also has potential impacts on human health when burned freely, as well as on wildlife. Let's start from ourselves, reduce the use of plastic from now on.""
The SERENTAL ACTION COLLABORATION: "This is my action! Where is your action?" today carries the main mission of inviting local communities to make easy and inexpensive changes, by reducing the plastic waste that we produce every day. The action named #PlastikTakAsik was participated by 23 cities supporting the EARTH HOUR Indonesia campaign, namely Jakarta, Tangerang, Bandung, Bekasi, Bogor, Solo, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Batu City, Malang, Sidoarjo, Kediri, Denpasar, Banda Aceh, Padang, Palembang, New Week, Balikpapan, Samarinda, Pontianak, Banjarmasin, Palangkaraya, and Makassar.
In Jakarta itself, the #PlastikTakAsik action is carried out in conjunction with the Car Free Day activities today at 06.00-10.00 WIB, with the center of action carried out in the Semanggi, Sudirman, and HI Roundabout areas, through three kinds of activities, namely:
1. Waste collection action to determine the potential amount of plastic waste during Car Free Day
- Starting from Panin Bank Stop (in front of Youth Statue) - Semanggi
- Starting from Semanggi Plaza Park (in front of Atmajaya University) - Menara BCA
- Starting from Arjuna Wiwaha Statue (in front of Indosat Building) - Bundaran HI
2. Upcycle Action, which is making shopping bags from used t-shirts in front of Menara BCA 2.
3. Collection of unused non-plastic shopping bags to support the reusable bag campaign in front of Menara BCA.
The #PlastikTakAsik action was supported by more than 100 individual and community volunteers, such as Jakarta Amateur Astronomy Association, Line Magic, Si Dalang, Jumper Parkour Freerun, Couch Surfing, Bike to Work, 1001 books, Peta Hijau Jakarta, Yoyo, Uttara ID, Federal Jakarta, London School of Public Relations Campus, Bakrie University Campus, and Pramuka.
Still in the series of Indonesia's EARTH HOUR Campaign this year, the SERENTAL COLLABORATION: "This is my action! Where is your action?" will still take place twice more, on March 9 with the theme "Save Paper and Tissue" and on March 23, 2014 with the theme "Water and Energy".

About Earth Hour Indonesia
Earth Hour is one of WWF's global campaigns that invites individuals, communities, business practitioners, and governments around the world to care about climate change caused by human activities, by doing something simple but will have a tremendous impact if it becomes a lifestyle: turning off lights and electronic equipment that is not being used for 1 hour, on every Saturday in the third week of March each year. It was first practiced in 2007 in Sidney, Australia, and started in 2009 in Indonesia. From just Jakarta, by 2013 Earth Hour Indonesia had expanded to more than 30 cities.
