JAKARTA AND 4 OTHER MAJOR CITIES STRENGTHEN GLOBAL EARTH HOUR 2011 ACTION
March 16, 2011
Jakarta (03/16)-The Earth Hour campaign is a simultaneous action by individuals, communities, corporations, and governments around the world to reduce the rate of global warming and the impacts of climate change. In 2009 and 2010, Earth Hour became the largest environmental campaign in history, garnering 1.5 billion supporters from 4616 cities in 128 countries.
This year, the third Earth Hour was held in Indonesia. WWF-Indonesia together with the Governor of DKI Jakarta Province, Fauzi Bowo, once again invites the public of Jakarta to turn off lights and electrical appliances that are not being used for 1 hour on Saturday, March 26, 2011, 20:30 - 21:30 (local time). "As an Earth Hour Ambassador, I am proud to be a part of this campaign.
"As the Ambassador of Earth Hour Indonesia, I am again willing to host this event. With the 60+ concept, it is hoped that Earth Hour will not only be perceived as a collective activity to turn off lights and electronic equipment that are not being used for 1 hour, but also become a momentum of reminders for lifestyle changes every day."
He added, "After Earth Hour, we can add more actions for the Earth with Car Free Day, as a form of our concern in reducing our daily carbon footprint by making public transportation our driving choice. Both can contribute to a better Jakarta environment in terms of energy efficiency, as well as efforts to tackle Climate Change."
A form of participation shown by Jakarta is to continue the commitment to turn off the lights in 5 (five) Jakarta icons on Saturday, March 26, 2011, 20:30 - 21:30 (local time), namely:
- Hotel Indonesia roundabout and its fountains
- Monas and its fountains
- Arjuna Wiwaha fountain
- The Youth Statue
- City Hall and related government buildings
In addition, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government also issued an appeal letter to all buildings along Sudirman - Thamrin - Gatot Subroto - Kuningan to participate in this movement and make it a policy that favors energy efficiency.
Dr. Efransjah, CEO of WWF-Indonesia: "Earth Hour is a time to remind people about carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel power plants and their contribution to climate change." Dr. Efransjah, CEO of WWF-Indonesia.
Differently this year, "We are also highlighting our renewable energy initiatives at our work sites in remote areas of Indonesia that have never had access to electricity. We have built a micro-hydro power plant in West Kalimantan. And, after Earth Hour 2011, we will build another microhydro plant in Central Kalimantan."
Jakarta has great potential to save energy and pioneer similar movements in other cities in Indonesia. Students and young people in Bandung, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Bali also felt the importance of energy-saving lifestyle changes and agreed to join Earth Hour 2011. They are following Jakarta's lead to invite the public and their local leaders to participate on March 26.
