EARTH HOUR 2022: IT'S TIME TO MAKE A BETTER FUTURE!
Jakarta, March 24, 2022- Saturday, March 26, 2022 at 20:30 - 21:30 (local time), Earth Hour, one of the largest grassroots environmental movements in more than 190 countries and territories and billions of people, will once again bring together millions of people around the world to show solidarity for people and planet. Taking place at a pivotal time, this year's Earth Hour invites people around the world to unite in a moment of reflection on our human connection and our shared planet.
From the Sydney Opera House where Earth Hour began in 2007, national icons such as Aceh's Baiturrahman Grand Mosque, the Islamic Center in Mataram, Sidoarjo's Jayandaru Monument will take part in this year's symbolic lights-out moment and seek to communicate a safer, fairer and more sustainable future for all.
"We also understand that building a future in harmony with nature requires peace between people. That is why this year's Earth Hour is a moment of solidarity for all those affected by war and conflict around the world; it is an opportunity for communities around the world to express their aspirations, to take positive action and to call for a world where people and planet can thrive together." In Indonesia, since its inception in 2009 until 2021, Earth Hour in Indonesia has been supported by local governments in 200 cities, and driven by 1068 active volunteers spread across 30 cities, and supported by 2 million supporters through digital activation. From 2014 to 2021, the Earth Hour Community has been actively involved in initiating conservation programs and has transplanted 1460 coral reefs at 5 locations in Bali and 13,110 mangrove seedlings in 6 regions, namely: Bali, Surabaya, Balikpapan, Aceh, Tangerang, and Serang. Aditya Bayunanda, Act. CEO of WWF Indonesia Foundation said, "Young people with their creative ideas can be the driving force for nature protection, for example the Earth Hour community. Young people are the spearhead of determining a better future for Indonesia's nature, so it is very important for us to encourage more youth movements, especially those that pay attention to environmental conditions." Aditya further said, "After all, our Earth is under threat, the decline in world biodiversity and the climate crisis is due to human activities, and the impact has been felt today, such as extreme weather, flash floods, and even the Covid-19 pandemic. Together we hope that there will be other positive movements in encouraging changes in human behavior and how each individual can play a role in saving our Earth. This year 2022, support from various parties, such as Earth Hour 2022 ambassador, Kafin Sulthan musician and film performer, and communities, institutions and corporations such as Earth Hour Indonesia MING, BCA, AISEC Indonesia, Panda Lestari, Scout Movement, I am a Wise Walker, I Choose Earth, B2W Indonesia, The Climate Reality Project Indonesia, Sekolah Murid Merdeka, King of Borneo Band, Journey to Zero and Indonesia Sketcher. *** Note to Editor: For more information, visit www.earthhour.org to find out what's happening at Earth Hour celebrations in locations around the world.
