EARTH HOUR 2016 AT A WORLD HERITAGE SITE: SAFEGUARDING THE "LOAN" OF THE NEXT GENERATION
By: Natalia Trita Agnika
The EARTH HOUR movement is once again inviting global citizens to take action against climate change. This time, the message "Shine a Light on Climate Action" was delivered from one of the world's cultural heritage in Indonesia in a press conference held at Rama Shinta Garden Resto Prambanan on Tuesday (15/03). This year, the Earth Hour celebration in Indonesia, which falls on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at 20.30-21.30 local time, will be marked by the participation of two world-renowned Indonesian icons, namely Borobudur Temple and Prambanan Temple.
"Borobudur Temple and Prambanan Temple are two world cultural heritages that we continue to pass on to the next generation. So, we are not only inherited but also pass it on. That element is also the philosophy of Earth Hour, which is that we are reminded that our nature is not inherited (to us -Red) but only loaned by the next generation. There is a very strong message in these two temples that will be carried continuously to future generations," explained Nyoman Iswarayoga, Director of Communication and Advocacy of WWF-Indonesia in his speech.
The previous year, Prambanan Temple took part in the Earth Hour celebration by turning off the temple lights during Earth Hour. This year, Prambanan Temple is participating again together with Borobudur Temple which will participate for the first time in the Earth Hour celebration. The Earth Hour celebration at Borobudur Temple on March 19 will be centered at Aksobya Field starting at 7:30 pm.
"On March 19, 2016, Taman Wisata Temple will extinguish the temple lights and other lights that we can extinguish at 20.30-21.30. Meanwhile, the lighting will remain on for safety. We also only turn on the lights and air conditioners that are needed in our office environment. This will become a lifestyle in our work environment in order to reduce energy use," said Retno Hardiasiwi, Director of Operations of PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan, and Ratu Boko.
The participation of Borobudur Temple and Prambanan Temple in Earth Hour 2016 is fully supported by PT. Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan & Ratu Boko (Persero), Borobudur and Prambanan Conservation Center, and UNESCO.
Later, the portrait of the lights going out at Prambanan and Borobudur Temples during the upcoming Earth Hour celebration will strengthen the message that we as a nation and as individuals are committed to fighting climate change. That commitment starts from the smallest thing by turning off the lights for one hour and then after that changing our lifestyle to an environmentally friendly lifestyle.
In addition to delivering climate change messages to the world from world cultural heritage, Earth Hour Indonesia also utilizes the power of social media to save the environment. Earth Hour Indonesia this year also received support from Twitter Indonesia. On the night of Earth Hour, Twitter users can follow the procession of switch-off at Borobudur Temple through Periscope broadcasts.
Teguh Wicaksono, Partnership Twitter Indonesia who also attended the press conference said that Twitter as a communication platform has a mission that is directly proportional to bridging parties who want to share positive messages, such as Earth Hour. This support is not only in Indonesia but also in several points in other parts of the world.
This year's Earth Hour also invites the public to support four forest greening conservation activities by donating through the Earth Hour Indonesia community's crowdfunding program on the http://earthhour.kitabisa.com.
The press conference, which was also attended by the Earth Hour Yogyakarta and Earth Hour Solo communities, was closed with a reflection: "We can choose whether or not to contribute to fighting climate change. But we cannot choose whether we will be affected by climate change or not."
Will we choose to participate in Earth Hour 2016? INI AKSIKU!
