2.8 TONS OF GARBAGE IN YOTEFA BAY SUCCESSFULLY COLLECTED
In commemoration of the 2019 National Waste Awareness Day (HPSN), on March 4, 2019, the Jayapura City Government, BBKSDA Papua, Papua Police, WWF, Earth Hour Community and other communities incorporated in the Jayapura Community Forum conducted cleanup actions at three important points in Jayapura City. The three points are the area along the hamadi tourist beach, Matudebi Island and Hanyaan river estuary. The Matudebi Island and Hanyaan Estuary areas are in direct contact with the Yotefa Bay Nature Park protection area and are the 'estuary' for waste generated in Jayapura city. 2.8 tons of waste were collected at these three points. The waste consisted of 472 Kg of glass bottle waste, 1,374 mixed waste and 162 kg of plastic waste.
Still in the framework of HPSN, previously on February 16, 2019, the Earth Hour community had also conducted a waste cleanup event packaged with the title Grebek Sampah 2109 at the Abesauw pier, Yotefa Bay. This pre Switch Off celebration activity has been carried out regularly in the last three years. "We collected around 1000 glass bottles of alcohol, and dozens of garbage bags containing plastic waste from bottles and glasses of bottled drinks," said Ros Weyai, City Coordinator of Earth Hour Jayapura. The plastic waste bottles were immediately channeled to the waste bank, she continued.
For the people of Jayapura city, the issue of waste is a very serious issue. In a way, the waste issue in Jayapura city also contributes to the recurring floods in various parts of the city. Aware of the increasing accumulation of waste in Jayapura city that requires serious treatment, there is now a widespread movement of environmental communities to hold clean-up activities both in tourist attractions and at crowded points that have the potential to accumulate waste. These communities carry out clean-up activities regularly and periodically. Not only that, this movement is increasingly widespread and is not limited to waste and environmental communities but to other communities that have the same mission, seeing a waste-free Jayapura city.
Currently, the Jayapura City Government has also issued instruction No. 1 of 2019 regarding the use of alternative shopping bags to replace plastic bags, following the regulation to ban the use of plastic bags in all stores, modern retail, and shopping centers starting February 1, 2019.
Of course, waste management does not end with the existence of regulations alone, but rather the commitment and awareness of the public to reduce waste.
