VISIT TO AIWA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - TOKYO, JAPAN
On September 20, 2017, the principal of SDN 010 Jambuk Makmur, one of the schools in East Kalimantan had the opportunity to conduct a comparative study to AIWA Public Elementary School, Tokyo, Japan. SDN 010 Jambuk Makmur is one of the schools that has been assisted by WWF - Indonesia's ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) program since 2011.
Both AIWA School, Japan and SDN 010 Jambuk Makmur, Jambuk Makmur have been conducting ESD programs. In addition to having a curriculum that incorporates environmental topics into existing subjects, the school also has a school garden managed by students from grade 1 to grade 6.
The AIWA school utilizes the schoolyard, where each class gets a plot of land and students have the responsibility to choose the plants to be planted and keep the plants healthy. The plants chosen by the students are diverse, including vegetables, fruits, chickens and fish in ponds. Then the harvest from the garden can be enjoyed together as a class. The urban forest, which is located behind the school, is also part of the learning activities with students.
There are not many significant differences between the two schools. Although one school is in an urban area in Japan and the other is in the outskirts of the West Kutai district with minimal facilities, but both have the same spirit to advance the nation with good education for future generations.
After discussing and touring the school, both principals agreed to continue communicating and sharing between principals, teachers and students. Hopefully this can go well. They will share through the website that is currently the center of information related to ESD programs in Borneo, namely pustakaborneo.org
