YOUTH SUMMER CAMP 2019: A PLATFORM FOR YOUNG PEOPLE TO CARE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
On June 21 - 23, 2019, Marine Buddies Community held Youth Summer Camp 2019 in Bali. This activity was initiated by Marine Buddies Indonesia as a form of concern for current marine issues by inviting young people to take part in it, and supported by WWF-Indonesia and PT Angkasa Pura 1.
Youth Summer Camp 2019 was attended by participants from all over Indonesia, with an age range from teenagers to young adults and involving various resource persons who are experts in their respective fields. This event is expected to provide an overview to the younger generation, especially the participants about the current condition of Indonesia's ocean, and encourage the emergence of initiatives to contribute to the preservation of Indonesia's ocean. The event was also a meeting place for Marine Buddies from all over Indonesia. Marine Buddies Indonesia has representatives in several cities, including Medan, Jakarta, Surabaya, Denpasar and Makassar.
The participants spent the night at Bukit Asah, Karangasem, Bali. The atmosphere of the camping ground which is located on a hill and not far from the sea, is very supportive of the process of running the event. As we know that almost 70% of Indonesia's territory is water area, so there are still many problems related to marine and coastal resources. Therefore, in the process, participants were also given many opportunities to discuss environmental problems that occur in the water area with experts in their fields. .
In the series of Youth Summer Camp 2019, there was a forum group discussion session for participants, where participants were divided into several large groups based on several major themes. Some of the themes raised in this session include sustainable tourism, climate change, plastic free ocean, and biodiversity and ecosystems. In this discussion session, participants were invited to share ideas about innovations that can contribute to marine conservation, which will then be adopted as a program to be implemented by the Marine Buddies community in each city.
Not only gaining knowledge from the discussion sessions, the participants also participated in direct conservation actions such as releasing hatchlings with TCEC (Turtle Conservation and Education Center), planting mangroves and introducing mangrove products at Kampoeng Kepiting. In addition, participants were also invited to get to know coral reef conservation and interspersed with other interesting things, such as snorkeling at Crystal Bay Nusa Penida, and canoeing at Kampoeng Kepiting. The enthusiasm of the participants did not subside until the last day of the event. The Youth Summer Camp 2019 was finally closed with a cultural night, where participants could perform shows from each region. This closing event was full of laughter and emotion, as the participants had to return to their respective cities the next day.
Youth Summer Camp 2019, not only brings together young people from all over Indonesia, but also provides a platform for young people who want to take part in marine conservation. As we all know, the young generation is the next generation of the nation. Who else will care, if not us? Because every small step we take can have a big impact on our surroundings. If we imagine that just ten people can do it, then transmit it to ten other people, of course it can have an impact that is not small. Hopefully, the 2019 Youth Summer Camp can be a trigger for the younger generation to be able to take part in the future for the sustainability of Indonesian and world marine life. It's never too late to start for us. If they are willing to participate, how about you, buddy?
