SUPPORTING SUSTAINABLE MARINE TOURISM IN SUPER PRIORITY DESTINATIONS
Labuan Bajo is included in the National Tourism Strategic Area (KSPN) with extraordinary natural resource potential both on land and in its waters. With this fact, making Labuan Bajo a new tourist destination that is in demand by both foreign tourists and local tourists. Based on data from the Tourism, Creative Economy and Culture Office of West Manggarai Regency, as many as 60,439 tourists visited Labuan Bajo in 2021 and experienced an increase of around 129% in 2022 or 170,354 tourists. Unfortunately, this increase in tourism activity is not matched by an improvement in the management of tourist destinations.
As an effort to manage sustainable marine tourism in Labuan Bajo, the Indonesian Capital Market in collaboration with the WWF Indonesia Foundation visited Seraya Marannu Village, Komodo District, on October 3, 2023 to provide its support in the management of strengthening marine tourism in Labuan Bajo.
This cooperation is implemented through five major programs, including: improving marine tourism governance, mangrove rehabilitation, strengthening community livelihoods, reducing plastic waste and educating stock investment planning that supports conservation.
Director of the Indonesian Capital Market, Jeffrey Hendrik, said, "I am very grateful to see the blue sky here, and that is what we will continue to do, ladies and gentlemen. We will keep the sky here blue, the sky clean, and nature sustainable for the welfare of all of us for generations to come."
Along with this visit, there was also the inauguration and handover of a fishermen information center and coolbox from the Indonesian Capital Market to a fishermen group in Seraya Marannu Village, a symbolic handover of 2000 mangrove seedlings and two kayaks to support tourism development in Rangko Hamlet, and a symbolic handover of a pilot village program in waste management in Labuan Bajo.
The Vice Regent of West Manggarai, Dr. Yulianus Weng, who also attended the event said, "On behalf of the government, we would like to express our appreciation and gratitude, especially to WWF Indonesia Foundation and the Indonesian Capital Market who have helped a lot in activities whose benefits can be directly felt by the community, especially the fishermen who support sustainable tourism. My message is, take care of this assistance as well as possible and utilize the existing facilities to the fullest."
WWF Indonesia Foundation CEO, Aditya Bayunanda, said, "WWF Indonesia Foundation is committed to continue supporting efforts in West Manggarai Regency. With the support of the Indonesian Capital Market, we are very pleased to collaborate with various parties in supporting the management of strengthening sustainable marine tourism. "Arriving in Labuan Bajo, the event then continued with a clean-up action carried out at Pede Beach. The event managed to collect as much as 7.7kg of 3R waste which was then taken to KSU Sampah Komodo for further management and 481.3kg of mixed plastic waste which was taken by the West Manggarai Regency Environment and Land Agency (DLHP) to the Warloka Landfill (TPA). This activity was attended by WWF Indonesia Foundation, Indonesia Capital Market, East Nusa Tenggara Provincial Marine and Fisheries Office, DLHP, and KSU Sampah Komodo.
It is hoped that the management of tourist destinations that apply sustainable principles can have an impact not only on the tourism actors themselves but also can improve the economy of the local community. So that tourism development in Labuan Bajo can encourage the sustainability of local communities and environmental sustainability.
