LEARNING TO WEAVE RATTAN, PROVISION FOR LIFE
Rotan, is a typical Indonesian plant. It is found in the forests of Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Nusa Tenggara. In fact, Indonesia is up to 70% of the world's rattan suppliers. One of the world's rattan suppliers comes from Lampeong village, Mt. Purei, North Barito Regency, Central Kalimantan.
If you visit this village, you will find rattan from the yard to the river near this village in the form of logs.
The people there still use a lot of rattan for daily goods in their homes such as bags and mats. Even rattan handicrafts are an alternative business for the community besides farming.
To preserve this rattan weaving culture, the school teaches students in junior high school rattan weaving skills adapted to the style of hereditary techniques and also developed new patterns. Students learn these skills through hands-on practice.
Rattan weaving is a special skill of the Lampeong village community. Mrs. Bungik, the teacher of this skill, proudly said, "I got my tuition and boarding fees from selling rattan handicrafts to her friends."
Currently, if we visit SMPN I Gunung Purei in Lampeong village, it is very easy to find rattan weaving craftsmen both young and old. Various innovative efforts both in style and weaving techniques continue to be made by the younger generation and still maintain the classic style.
The skills that they have, are skills that are starting to become rare. Entrepreneurship in rattan handicrafts and promoting to outside the region can introduce the culture and the village where they live. Cultivating rattan handicrafts, maintaining the existence of rattan and also protecting the forest.
