ALOR FESTIVAL 2019: CONSERVATION MEASURES FOR TOURISM
The province of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) is currently boosting the regional economy with the tagline "NTT Bangkit". In this effort, tourism is called the main driving force. This tourism development is embodied in the development of the Ring of Beauty in NTT Province. The environment and protected species are the main assets of tourism, so tourism development needs to pay attention to conservation aspects in order to create good governance.
In the Alor Festival (Panggil Ikan) activity, WWF-Indonesia together with the government of NTT Province and Alor Regency held a workshop with the theme "The Role of the Alor Pantar Strait Waters Conservation Area as a Supporting Tourism Program (Ring of Beauty Program) which is the Main Driver of Economic Development in NTT Province". The activity was opened directly by the Governor of NTT, Viktor Bungtilu Laiskodat, who said that tourism is the main driving force of the NTT economy. Tourism development is carried out with a sustainable and inclusive strategy so that the impact can be felt by the people of NTT. This has been strategically outlined in the Regional Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMD) of NTT Province. In addition, environmental cleanliness is an important thing that needs to be encouraged to ensure guest comfort and environmental sustainability.
The purpose of the workshop is to increase public understanding of the role of the Pantar Strait aquatic nature reserve (SAP) conservation area and the surrounding sea in supporting tourism programs. It is hoped that every element of society will have the right interpretation of conservation values to be applied. In this workshop, several speakers were presented, such as; Head of the NTT Provincial Communication and Information Office Drs. Aba Maulaka, Alor Regency DPRD member and environmental and tourism observer Deny Lalitan, CEO of Qlimut Benny Leonardu and Android application development institution in NTT, Mika Maharani Gynecologia, CEO of Mala Tour Travel which is a member of Signing Blue, and Onesimus Laa, Chairman of the Kabola Fishermen Communication Forum. The workshop was also attended by Alor Regency and NTT Province officials, FORKOPIMDA (Regional Leadership Coordination Forum) elements of Alor Regency and NTT Province, law enforcement officials, indigenous peoples and the general public of Alor.
The conclusion that can be drawn in this workshop is that conservation areas play an important role in the development of tourism programs. The conservation area of Alor Pantar Strait provides a place to live for Duyung and ensures the beauty of coral reefs is well maintained, where coral reefs are also an important asset for Alor Regency, especially as a tourist attraction.
In line with that, waste management is an important priority. Currently the NTT Provincial government is developing an Android-based Waste Free application. This application was developed by the Qlimutu Institute. This effort was carried out as part of monitoring and evaluating government performance to be able to provide excellent service to the community. In the application, there are several thematic channels, including a garbage complaint channel and an information channel about the NTT regional water conservation area, the Sawu Sea Waters National Park.
The workshop was also coupled with an exhibition of Micro, Small, Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) assisted by WWF-Indonesia who are members of the Alor Creative group. The group produces souvenirs made from coconut shell waste, Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO). In addition, there is also a Plastic Free Ocean Network (PFON) Alor group coordinated by Tribuana University Kalabahi to produce eco-bricks made from plastic waste.
In a visit to the UMKM stand, the Governor of NTT appreciated the community empowerment activities by ordering 100 bottles of VCO products. The governor also asked the Alor Regional Government to support community empowerment efforts by facilitating the licensing process of MSME products.
