"THE AGE OF STUPID": GREENPEACE, WWF-INDONESIA, OXFAM DEMAND CLIMATE ACTION
Jakarta, 17 October 2009 - Greenpeace, WWF-Indonesia, Oxfam and its partners, allied under the tiktoktiktok GCCA (Global Coalition on Climate Change) umbrella, today demanded that world leaders fast-track the stalled UN led negotiations on climate change in order to avert climate chaos at a green carpet low carbon screening of ""The Age of Stupid"" docuanimation-drama film in Jakarta.
The majority of the audience, including leading environmental advocates, policy makers, and celebrities, arrived on bicycles and by public transport for the carbon-friendly screening held at Tugu Proklamasi in Central Jakarta that was reminiscent of old fashioned drive-in shows with free access for all. A Green Bazaar, live music and discussion organized together with ITDP (Institute for Transport and Development Policy) and Green Radio precede the show.
""We are counting down to the most important meeting of our lives. This December, world leaders are gathering in Copenhagen to forge a global climate deal. The impacts of climate change are mounting every day, but we still have time to put ourselves on the path to a better world. A strong climate treaty will not only reverse the march of dangerous climate change - it will also help us tackle the world's largest challenges. We will create millions of green jobs, reduce healthcare costs, lift millions out of poverty, and put renewable energy into the hands of everyday citizens in the developing world. Let's pass on a better world to our children. A better world awaits,"" said Rully Prayoga of GCCA.
""But even though the impact of climate change is already rearing its ugly head, the dire urgency to take strict measures still does not seem to have sunk in. We were again disappointed by the lack of progress at the UN Climate talks in Bangkok last week. As one of the most important leaders in Southeast Asia-the region recognized as one of the most exposed and least prepared for the impacts of climate change- we ask President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to go to the UNFCCC in Copenhagen and demonstrate his leadership for a binding, fair and ambitious climate deal"", continued Rully Prayoga.
""The movie is especially significant to the people of Southeast Asia who are among the most vulnerrable and least prepared regions to face the impacts of global warming. Typhoons Ondoy (Ketsana) and Pepeng (Parma) in the Philippines earlier this month were a dramatic reminder of the tragedies that lay ahead if we do not seriously tackle climate change,"" said Davina, famous model and actress at the event.
The Age of Stupid is directed by Franny Amstrong (McLibel), and produced by Lizzie Gillett and Oscar winner John Battsek (One Day in September). It stars Oscar-nominated Pete Postlethwaite as an old man living in the devastated world of 2055, watching 'archive' footage from 2008 and asking ""Why didn't we stop climate change while we had the chance?"" It has been described by media and politicans alike as of vital importance and essential viewing to anyone who cares about the survival of our planet. [1]
