In Indonesia, there are 3 types of orangutan species, they are sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii), the bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) and the Tapanuli orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis). All of them are had critical status based on IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature).
The main threats to orangutans are habitat loss, illegal logging, forest fires, hunting, and illegal trading. So this species clasisified by CITES as a species that is prohibited for international commercial trade because it is very vulnerable to extinction.
WWF-Indonesia focuses on influencing governance and management of forest which are orangutan’s habitat using best management practices. We collaborate with researchers, local communities, and government authorities.
