Turtles are the protected animals under Undang-Undang Nomor 5 Tahun 1990 about Conservation of Living Natural Resources and the Ecosystems. Unfortunately, many people still hunt turtle eggs for sale or own consumption.
Various threats haunt the existence of turtles in Indonesia. People who collecting turtle eggs, hunting for adult turtles meat, and accidental death by fishing gear. Plastic garbage in the ocean is also the cause of death for these turtles. Phthalates, a chemical derived from plastics, are often found in turtle egg yolks. Turtles assume the plastic in ocean are their favorite food, jellyfish.
WWF-Indonesia always protects sea turtles through programs as a conservation efforts. We increasing public awareness, monitoring turtle migration patterns, supporting the control of illegal wildlife trade, protecting turtle nest areas, promoting and facilitating the establishment of Marine Protected Areas (MPA), handling cases of turtles bycatch directly on fishing boats, and signed a memorandums of the commitment to protect turtle life in Indonesia.
