WWF-INDONESIA JOINS "WORLD TOWN PLANNING DAY EXPO 2009"

Jakarta (08/11)-Commemorating World Town Planning Day 2009, WWF-Indonesia took part in World Town Planning Expo 2009 conducted for two days, from Saturday (07/11) to Sunday (08/11) at the West Plaza of Bung Karno Sports Stadium in Senayan, Jakarta. 52 participants joined the event. They were government institutions, associations, universities, business sectors, and NGOs.
WWF-Indonesia booth mainly exhibited geographic information and featured Heart of Borneo (HoB) initiative. Geographic information provided were deforestation map of Kalimantan 2003-2008, landcover and national park corridor map of Kalimantan, elevation map of Kalimantan, and some documentary films the work of WWF-Indonesia initiative Heart of Borneo. RENEWS (making shopping bags using used newspaper) workshop livened up the booth.
At WWF's booth, visitors were able to access geographic information through website using provided laptop. Moreover WWF-Indonesia staff gladly gave the information to all visitors and explained WWF's programs.
""Our participation is our expression of support to the government, particularly Department of Public Work, which has been engaged with us practicing ecosystem-based spatial plan in Sumatra and Kalimantan. Now, we are working in Papua,"" WWF-Indonesia GIS officer Doni Prihatna said.
Carrying theme ""Bersama Menata Ruang untuk Bersama (literally meaning Working Spatial Plan Together for Our Collective Needs)"", the exhibition is expected to develop knowledge regarding spatial plan. As a result an effective collaboration on spatial plan between goverment, business sectors,NGOS, and other stakeholders will be increased. In the future this will promote ecosystem-based spatial plan leading to sustainable urban development.
The exhibition was part of the celebration of world town planning day besides the declaration on sustainable urban development signed by Deputy of Governor for Spatial Plan and Environment Achmad Harijadi, Banjarmasin's Mayor Yudhi Wahyuni, representatives from associations for instance Head of Association of Indonesian Planning Schools (ASPI) Haryo Winarso, Head of Indonesian Architects Association (IAI) Endy Subijono, Bintang A. Nugroho from Green Building Council Indonesia (GBCI), Hari Ganie from Real Estate Indonesia (REI), and society figures.
