WORLD ORANGUTAN DAY 2021: TALKING ORANGUTANS, HABITATS AND HUMAN LIFESTYLES
Only found in limited areas of Indonesia, orangutans are one of the most protected wildlife species and are always worthy of attention. Many community movements highlight orangutan conservation efforts in Indonesia, one of which is the Earth Hour Indonesia Community which collaborates with the Indonesian Orangutan Forum (FORINA) in celebrating World Orangutan Day this year by organizing a series of activities, namely Webinars and Instagram Live involving local communities from West Kalimantan, biodiversity experts, scientists, and influencers. This series of activities was held on Wednesday, August 18, 2021 through the Zoom and Instagram platforms.
The series of celebrations began with a webinar entitled "Corridor Restoration, for Orangutan Habitat Preservation" which also collaborated with the West Kalimantan Orangutan Conservation Forum (FOKKAB), the Ngaung Keruh Lestari Restoration Team, and LPHD Kalibandung, which was held through the Zoom platform and attended by around 140 participants. In this webinar activity, the speakers involved were Mr. Robertus Tutong and Mr. Usman, who came from the Ngaung Keruh Lestari Restoration Team and LPHD Kalibandung in West Kalimantan. Mr. Tutong said that as a local community living side by side with orangutan habitat, there are many activities that have been carried out by the Ngaung Keruh Lestari Restoration Team to maintain and restore forest ecosystems so that they remain sustainable, some of which include socialization and workshops on habitat, building nurseries, to a series of planting and monitoring, which of course benefits the local community and wildlife, one of which is orangutans. Just like Mr. Tutong, Mr. Usman as the Head of LPHD Kalibandung also explained the efforts that have been made by the local community, including restoration, land intensification, area patrols, and also collaborating with other stakeholders using the pentaheliks method.
Next, as a respondent, Prof. Ani Mardiastuti stated that the activities carried out by Mr. Tutong and Mr. Usman were challenging, but both of them managed to carry out habitat restoration with good cooperation. In her response, Prof. Ani added the importance of maintaining forest corridors for the survival of forest animals, such as orangutans, which are an umbrella species in forest ecosystems. In line with Prof. Ani, Ms. Sri Suci Utami also stated that the restoration was very challenging, given the hilly forest conditions, especially in the Pak Tutong area in Ngaung Keruh. Touching on one of the constituent components of the ecosystem where orangutans live, Ms. Suci explained the importance of the role of lianas in tropical forest ecosystems and how these plants are one of the favorites of orangutans, which are also very useful for humans with their potential as medicinal plants, so in other words, Ms. Suci stated that all the components that make up this orangutan habitat provide extraordinary benefits, both for orangutans and the people who live around the forest.
The World Orangutan Day celebration continued with a Live Instagram activity on Earth Hour Indonesia's website (@ehindonesia) with FORINA's orangutan scientist and specialist Didik Prasetyo, as well as actor and Nature Warrior Arifin Putra. For less than an hour, the broadcast, moderated by Wibi from Earth Hour Indonesia, discussed the basic science of orangutans, and how human lifestyles can indirectly affect orangutan survival. Mas Didik said that during the current Covid-19 pandemic, it is very possible for us to transmit the virus to primates, including orangutans, one example case has already occurred in a zoo at the San Diego Zoo, against two gorillas. According to Arifin, it is wise that when dealing with primates (and other animals), we do not touch them to prevent cross-contamination from animals to humans, and vice versa.
As an actor, Arifin Putra is one of the public figures active in campaigning for wildlife protection and sustainable lifestyles, where he realizes the importance of voicing and raising public awareness on these issues, and becoming a Nature Warrior is one way of advocating and inspiring. According to him, changing lifestyles to be more aware and sustainable is one of the first steps in protecting and caring for the environment. Agreeing with Arifin, Mas Didik added, that the small things we do will have a huge impact on the environment that is far beyond what we can see.
