WENANAM, JOINT ACTION TO GREEN INDONESIA
Cibulao, West Java, May 30, 2025. Planting trees is a simple act that can have a big impact on the environment. Trees play an important role in absorbing carbon dioxide, producing oxygen, and maintaining the balance of the ecosystem. In addition, the presence of trees can also slow down the rate of climate change and help prevent natural disasters.
On the occasion of his birthday on April 29, environmental influencer Jerhemy Owen launched the WENANAM initiative. At her new age, Jerhemy committed to planting 5,000 trees, while encouraging her followers to contribute.
Participation in this movement is done by sharing the content 15 times. Every 15 posts made by his followers will be converted into one tree planted. With a maximum target of 5,000 trees, the journey of this initiative starts from the first content that has been shared.
From the first shared content, within just 8 hours, the initiative had garnered participation to plant more than 5000 trees, and continued to grow until it reached 10,000 trees. Of course, planting that many trees cannot be done alone. This activity is the result of a collaboration between Jerhemy Owen, Mantappu.Corp, WWF-Indonesia, the Ministry of Forestry, TikTok, and Jejakin, who jointly support the Wenanam Movement.
The Wenanam Movement.
Jerhemy Owen said, "This activity shows that the public's concern to save the environment is very high, as seen from the content that is forwarded". Owen continued, "Planting trees is not just for today but for the long term, for our own sake. I hope that nature lover communities throughout Indonesia can participate in planting trees, together organizing each and can get free seeds from the Ministry of Forestry, can come directly to the nursery, and one KTP can get 25 tree seeds."

The 10,000 tree seedlings are supported by the Ministry of Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia and will be planted in Cibulao Village, Tugu Utara Village, Cisarua District, Bogor Regency, West Java Province. Cibulao Village is upstream of the Ciliwung River and is on land owned by PT Perhutani. This location is also an area assisted by WWF-Indonesia in the sustainable coffee development program.
This location was chosen with consideration, first, because of the floods that often hit Jakarta, one of which is caused by runoff water that is not properly absorbed. This is due to the reduction of water catchment areas and the decreasing number of large trees that are able to absorb water optimally. The roots of large trees have the ability to retain water, so that it can prevent the heavy flow towards Bogor City, which ultimately increases the water discharge into Jakarta.
In addition, this area is the upstream of the Ciliwung River, which is the focus of conservation. This location is also an area assisted by WWF-Indonesia in the sustainable coffee program, where a Cibulao coffee farmer community has been formed. The existence of the community facilitates the organizing process, because the planted trees will be maintained sustainably. If any die, replanting will be done. In the future, the process of planting and maintaining the trees will be continued by the Cibulao Forest Farmers Group (KTH) for a period of three years.
Cibulao Coffee has been widely recognized since 2016, when robusta coffee from the region won the Specialty Coffee Indonesia Contest. Apart from being known for its quality, Cibulao Coffee is also known as conservation coffee, as its existence plays a role in preserving the environment. Previously, the Cibulao area had experienced drought and landslides due to the lack of water catchment areas. However, after being planted with coffee and receiving support from various parties, environmental conditions began to improve, and coffee plants thrived.
Coffee planting also requires shade trees such as Suren, Pinus, Puspa, and other types of trees. The combination of coffee plants and shade trees can reduce soil erosion, which has been one of the main causes of flooding. This is one of the important reasons why this location was chosen as part of the tree planting initiative.
Dewi Lestari Yani Rizki, Conservation Director of WWF-Indonesia, said, "WWF-Indonesia is very proud to support the young generation's movement to save the environment". Dewi continued, "This is an important movement to inspire all that even the smallest movement to save the environment has a good impact on the earth, for example, something as simple as planting a tree."
The WENANAM movement targets to plant 10,000 trees, consisting of various types of perennials and fruits, such as Pine, Damar, Jackfruit, Coffee, and Mango. Based on calculations conducted by JEJAKIN, over a period of three years, these trees are estimated to store around 82.79 tons of carbon and have the potential to absorb up to 303 tons of CO₂e (TCO2e).
This movement does not stop here. Hopefully, similar initiatives can be carried out in various regions throughout Indonesia. By planting trees, we are contributing to creating a greener, healthier, and more sustainable earth for future generations.
