MINISTRY OF MARINE FISHERIES AND WWF-INDONESIA SIGN NEW PARTNERSHIP TO REALIZE BLUE ECONOMY-BASED MARINE AND FISHERIES SECTOR
Jakarta, October 28, 2024. The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) signed a new agreement document with the WWF Indonesia Foundation for 2024-2029. This latest cooperation carries the theme "Realizing the Transformation of Marine and Fisheries Sector Development Based on Blue Economy", this is a form of continuation of the results of the evaluation of joint agreements that have been carried out in the previous period. Officially, this cooperation has been carried out for more than 15 years since the establishment of the CTF.

Sakti Wahyu Trenggono with details: assistance and development of conservation areas in waters covering 5.4 million hectares or 18.3% of the total 28.9 million hectares until 2023, support for the management and monitoring of areas carried out by community groups and Unit Management Organization Units (SUOP), as well as public awareness regarding the issue of plastic waste pollution in the sea. While the contribution in the field of fisheries, WWF-Indonesia has succeeded in supporting the production process of environmentally friendly seafood as much as 57,908 tons and farmed shrimp by 62% of the 2,644 tons that have successfully obtained ecolabel certificates (ASC) originating from member companies of Seafood Savers that are assisted in supporting the efforts of seafood resilience and sustainability in Indonesia.

Aditya added, "In the future, we can work together more strongly, to further develop center of excellence species conservation, focus on research, and promote solutions to future global challenges, including addressing the impacts of climate change on Indonesia's oceans."
Conservation of protected marine species is also a focal point of WWF-Indonesia's activities by contributing to the preparation of marine spatial plans (RZ KSN/KSNT) in 11 locations, National Action Plans (NAP), public campaigns to reduce illegal trade in protected species. WWF also publishes guidelines for environmentally friendly seafood consumers, promotes the adoption of aquaculture technology for small-scale farmers, and capacity building for fishermen and community groups on the issue of bycatch and stranded species cases.
For effective management of conservation areas, WWF promotes learning centers or MPA CoE (Marine Protected Area Center of Excellence) in Alor and Wakatobi involving local governments, area managers, community groups, universities, and local stakeholders. In addition, in the last five years, capacity building has been carried out for more than 4,000 stakeholders related to the sustainable management and utilization of marine resources. Also, 60 scientific publications, guides, and studies can support the management of conservation areas and fisheries.
"KKP is committed to promoting blue economy policies through synergy with strategic partners, such as WWF Indonesia Foundation, with a focus on five policies: expanding marine conservation areas, quota-based measured fishing, sustainable aquaculture, coastal area monitoring, and plastic waste cleanup. These policies are in line with the government's vision and mission for 2025-2029 to achieve a Golden Indonesia 2045. On October 18, 2024, a Joint Agreement on the Transformation of Marine and Fisheries Sector Development Based on Blue Economy was signed, valid for five years, to strengthen the balance between marine ecosystem sustainability and community welfare," said Rudy Heriyanto Adi Nugroho, Secretary General of KKP.
The process of preparing the Programmatic Strategy of WWF-Indonesia's Directorate of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries has referred to the priority policy pillars targeted by KKP. WWF-Indonesia believes that with good cooperation and synergy, it can realize Indonesia's sustainable seas and prosperous communities, as well as increase transformation efforts in the marine and fisheries sector based on the blue economy.
