TIPS FOR DEALING WITH TIGER ATTACKS
By: Sela Ola Olangi Barus
If you look at YouTube, there are tons of videos showing tiger attacks in the wild. What should we do if we encounter a tiger? What should we avoid? How to do it? Even though you live in the city, it doesn't mean you don't need this knowledge. Let's look at the tips and tricks.
Reporting from the official website of National Geographic Indonesia, Philip Nyhus, a tiger expert and professor from Colby College, USA, provides some tips to get around tiger attacks if you have the opportunity to visit the forest.
First, don't panic. Try to stay calm and not be rash. Just as humans would be shocked if they met a tiger suddenly, tigers may experience the same thing. Second, block the attack. Use any object around you that can block the tiger. Third, keep your distance. Even if you are trying to make peace with it, try to keep your distance so you don't get too close to the tiger. Fourth, don't look weak. For more than 10,000 years the tiger's brain has evolved to take anything that is too small for them and capture it by breaking its neck and spine. Show that you are not their prey and try to look big and walk backwards. Also try to speak calmly but firmly to get the tiger to move out of the way, just like you would talk to your pet. If that doesn't work, you can attack the tiger's vital body parts. The slightest resistance will make it harder for the tiger to beat us.
Fifth, sound something for help. Try to move objects that can make noise so that people around you can help. Sixth, throw an object in another direction. Distract the tiger by throwing an object in another direction to confuse the tiger's view.
The point is, whatever you do when faced with a tiger, don't try to kill it. The tiger's hunting instinct is not to attack humans, but for animals that are lower in the food chain pyramid. It is more important to let it live freely in the wild.
