SCHOOL FOREST, SDN 002 MALINAU SELATAN
South Malinau 002 elementary school utilizes the surrounding environment as a learning medium in the implementation of the work plan, since the beginning of the assistance with WWF-Indonesia. By utilizing the school forest as a learning media, it is expected to make it easier for teachers to give explanations because there are many things that can be felt and seen directly by students and it is expected that this can also be fun for students.
In realizing the school forest, WWF-Indonesia provided assistance for 3 days on 28-30 August 2017. The school forest is used as a medium of learning because it has a wealth of biodiversity and has the potential as medicinal plants, home building materials, natural dyes, crafts and others.
During the data collection by the teachers and WWF-Indonesia team, 40 types of plants were found, some of which are rattan, ficus (fig wood), ironwood trees, meranti, agarwood and many more.
The implementation of plant identification involved 4th, 5th and 6th grade students who were divided into 10 groups. Each group collected 3 different types of leaves that will be made into herbarium. Students did it enthusiastically, each group could mention the name of the plant and the shape of the leaves that had previously been explained by the companion.
The student's task is continued by looking for local names and functions of plants in the school forest for living things, especially the surrounding community, which will later be continued with the preparation of classroom learning and making complete information about the school forest.
This activity is expected to be an example and learning for other assisted schools. For teachers and students at SDN 002, this Forest School is a new form of learning. Learning is not only in books but also what is seen in the environment around us.
