ALAMANDA NATIONAL SCHOOL STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT HYDROPONICS WITH PANDA MOBILE
Wednesday morning, January 23 2019, cloudy weather accompanied the Panda Mobile team to Alamanda National Kindergarten and Elementary School, Depok, West Java. Even though the sky was gloomy, the Panda Mobile team was still excited about preparing various environmental education activities at the school, starting from coloring pictures and various games. However, the most interesting activity this time was growing plants using the hydroponic method.
The event participants looked excited while participating in farming activities using the hydroponic method. They were ready with their respective bottles of used mineral water. They were amazed to learn that it turns out that plants don't have to be grown in the ground. "I just found out that used bottles can be made into containers for plants, thank you WWF-Indonesia," said Zidane, a student at Alamanda National Elementary School, who expressed his enthusiasm by half shouting.
Seeing the young participants who came with high curiosity, the Panda Mobile team was even more excited to explaining hydroponics. Volunteers and school teachers started the practice by guiding the children to turn mineral water bottles into hydroponic plant containers. Initially, used bottled water was cut into two parts, then the lid was perforated and a wick made of patchwork was given. The cloth wick is useful as a water conductor or a substitute for roots from the water that is at the bottom of the bottle. Then at the top of the bottle container is placed rockwool to store some vegetable seeds. This time, Panda Mobile invites participants to try growing caisim and kale.
It didn't stop there, Alamanda School students were still curious about how to care for plants using the hydroponic method. For them, how to grow with hydroponics is a new thing. According to the Panda Mobile team, vegetable seeds grown in the hydroponic growing media must be stored in a damp room for two weeks. When the seeds have developed, showing young leaves and roots, the new plants can be moved outdoors to the sun. For optimal plant growth, hydroponic water must be supplemented with nutrients in the form of liquid fertilizer.
Apart from farming activities using the hydroponic method, other Panda Mobile posts are no less exciting. Participants can play the orangutan crank, which tells facts about the Sumatran and Bornean orangutans. Apart from that, there was also a screening of the film Quartet Of The Crossroads which described the conservation efforts undertaken by WWF-Indonesia.
Hydroponic practice, hopscotch games, and movies are simple things that can be done as media for environmental education. From the participant's point of view, this activity can be considered as a game. However, the Panda Mobile team and all volunteershope that all these activities can stick in the minds of young participants. That way, they will grow into individuals who love the environment.
