By: Adella Adiningtyas
Indonesia's rich biodiversity and beautiful seas are the reasons why we should explore it. It would be a shame if we just sat around every day without knowing what's out there. But, don't immediately blame yourself why you can't explore Indonesia today. There are many ways we can get to know Indonesia's seas. Through #JelajahSamudra WWF-Indonesia shares information about our ocean and its contents.
Indonesian seas have various types of fish that can be consumed every day. In fact, it is known that there are 2500 species of fish that live in our seas. Each species certainly has its own characteristics and uniqueness. However, some of these fish species are in a state of population decline due to irresponsible fishing. If this continues, don't be surprised when you #JelajahSamudra not many fish can be found. There are also fish species that are protected by government regulations not to be caught and consumed, such as dugongs, sea turtles and dolphins.
Body Disguise Skills of Grouper
Then, what other types of fish do you know that exist in Indonesian waters? Yes, grouper is one of the many types of fish that we find. There are about 160 species of grouper in the world. Almost all of them have wide bodies with large heads and mouths. With a spotted body resembling marine life, groupers often disguise themselves among coral reefs.
Grouper fish are not fast swimmers for long distances, with their disguise tricks groupers often stay still waiting for prey to eat. Because of this skill, groupers can eat fish, small sharks, hatchlings or lobsters at any time. Of course, this is also the reason why groupers are often caught using cyanide poison.
Although almost all grouper fish grow relatively slowly, some grouper species can live up to 5 - 15 years old. We can find grouper seafood menus at selected restaurants in the capital. However, when you want to consume grouper, you should not choose fish that are in egg condition, because large female grouper can produce up to 1 million eggs. Wow, what an incredible number, huh? Do you have the heart to kill 1 million groupers that will live in the Indonesian sea? To anticipate this, let's ask our favorite seafood sellers to serve only adult-sized grouper. By choosing a mature grouper, we are ensuring that the fish has reproduced and guaranteeing the availability of grouper in the sea for the future.
Isn't it better to have grouper fish disguised among corals than to have them reduced due to irresponsible fishing? Let's #BuyTheGood
