EARTH HOUR CAMPAIGN 2013 FILLED WITH COMMUNITY ACTIONS
By: Laura Stefhannie & Ciptanti Putri
Since February 22, the Earth Hour 2013 campaign has become a series of real actions in 31 cities. Not just an action to turn off the electricity for one hour at the peak of the celebration on March 23, Earth Hour targets the growth and spread of environmentally friendly lifestyles at all levels of society.
Supporters and activists of the Earth Hour Campaign created and carried out a number of actions. Among them, several Earth Hour Champions from various cities learned to sing the Indonesia Raya song in sign language as a form of appreciation for the existence of people with disabilities. The video of this activity can be accessed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=6SCtXbzGXo8. There was also an action challenge for Miss Universe, Olivia Culpo, who visited Indonesia and visited Yogyakarta. Olivia then took the time to give her support through a video recorded by Earth Hour Yogyakarta activists.
The actions of supporters and activists of the Earth Hour Campaign in the early weeks of the campaign highlighted the problem of waste. Along with the celebration of Waste Awareness Day on February 21, Earth Hour Yogyakarta supporters and activists conducted a beach cleanup at one of the dirtiest beaches there. In Palangkaraya, Earth Hour supporters and activists opened a 'Waste Bank' in the Car-Free Day (CFD) area. Plastic bottles, newspapers, and other waste can be exchanged for various fruit plant seeds. Meanwhile, in Solo, Earth Hour supporters and activists made an 'Eling Sampah Campaign' every Sunday in the CFD area, with the slogan, 'If there is no trash can, your shirt bag can help save the Earth.'
The @EHIndonesia timeline was also enlivened by 201 people's commitment to 'waste fasting' on February 21, 2013, from 09:00-18:00 local time. The #puasasampah action stopped the habit of using straws, plastic bags, and other environmentally unfriendly containers. Supporters and activists of Earth Hour in Tangerang even challenged 5,000 residents of the city to sign up for 'Energy Saving Action' at earthhour.wwf.or.id, as well as an additional 3,000 followers of the @EHtangerang Twitter account. If achieved, these supporters and activists will clean the Cisadane River and all city parks in the Tangerang area.
On its first day, Earth Hour 2013 proudly launched the Earth Hour Indonesia Documentary Video. This video is a form of appreciation for the supporters of the Earth Hour Campaign throughout Indonesia. This AKSI video on Earth Hour Indonesia's Youtube account inspired the Earth Hour Campaign and the Peace Campaign in Libya. The video can be downloaded at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2YCvqTs-U0. Meanwhile, Tangerang became the first city to launch the AKSI challenge video for Earth Hour 2013 (http://youtu.be/ZRTRVwykWbY). In Pontianak, together with the Pontianak Disabled Community, campaign supporters and activists presented a campaign video using sign language (http://youtu.be/fGttddlEo_s). Not to be outdone, supporters and activists of the Earth Hour Campaign in Makassar launched their campaign video at Losari Beach (http://youtu.be/9PzLC2Tzd3k).
There are various ways Earth Hour campaigners and supporters mark the start of their action. In Aceh, the Mayor of Banda Aceh, the Police Chief of Banda Aceh, and the Director of PLN as well as around 60 communities expressed their readiness to join the campaign and adopt an energy-efficient lifestyle. Earth Hour supporters in this city then took a photo of the underwater area at KM 0 to mark the start of the campaign. Meanwhile in Yogyakarta, supporters of the Earth Hour Campaign cycled while wearing campaign attributes around Plengkung Gading, south of Kidul Square. They invited the people of the city to get involved in the Earth Hour International celebration that will be held simultaneously around the world on March 23, 2013.
In the second week, the actions of supporters and activists of the Earth Hour Campaign intensified. In Denpasar, they managed to gather more than 100 adopters for the #BirukanLaut program that started in mid-February. The coral reef adoption program, whose first nursery was conducted on March 2 in West Bali, was not only supported by Balinese citizens, but also by champions from various cities, including 10 coral reefs named 'Earth Hour Makassar'.
earthhoursolo.org in early March. This site not only contains the latest information on their activities every day, but also contains writings from supporters and activists about the environmentally friendly actions they have taken. These writings are expected to be an inspiration and a form of #iniAksiku60hari with supporters and activists of the Earth Hour Campaign in Solo.
In the third week, a donation-based replanting activity called "MyBabyMangrove" was held in Lam Ujung Village, Mesjid Raya District, Aceh Besar, and in Pantai Bahagia Village, Muara Gembong, Bekasi. This activity is a concrete action of the Earth Hour 2013 Campaign, and has been supported by corporations. Tupperware donated 5,000 mangrove trees for each of the deforested areas. This program can be participated by anyone and is very easy. People can donate IDR 150,000 for one tree seedling. This fee includes the cost of intensive maintenance for 5 years. Each tree planted will be named after the person or party who adopted it, then photographed and equipped with a GPS device, then uploaded via an online application. The growth of "MyBabyMangrove" seedlings can be monitored online, as each tree has a GeoTag coordinate, which shows the location of the seedling in the planting block location from the GoogleEarth application. Be sure to donate online at www.mybabytree.org.
This year's Earth Hour campaign is not only turning off the lights for 60 minutes, but also doing 'This is My Action', an energy-saving activity for 60 Days. Join more than 2 million people in 152 countries in this campaign via earthhour.wwf.or.id.
