CELEBRATE WORLD OCEANS DAY: ONE PERSON - ONE ACTION
Every living thing needs a healthy ocean, nearly 70% of the oxygen in the atmosphere comes from the sea and almost a third of the human population depends on marine resources. During World Oceans Day on June 8, Marine Buddies and WWF Indonesia Foundation invite the entire community to make one meaningful action for the health of Indonesia's oceans. This action is delivered through a campaign called "Action for Our Ocean".
Marine Buddies is an environmental community engaged in marine conservation. This community was formed by WWF-Indonesia in 2008 and has been active since 2016 until now. The vision of Marine Buddies is "Engaging young people throughout Indonesia to contribute to various activities related to marine conservation". Along with the mission of "marine conservation", the values related to marine conservation in this activity are mainly targeted at young people. The role of young people is very important as a driving force in preserving the ocean.
There are many small actions that everyone can do to contribute to preserving the marine ecosystem, such as; reducing the use of liquid waste, sorting and recycling waste, ensuring household waste is processed through waste banks, reducing the use of single-use plastics, being a responsible traveler, choosing environmentally friendly or ecolabeled seafood products, participating in beach clean-up activities, planting mangroves, and reporting findings of illegal trade in protected and endangered marine species such as turtles, sharks, dugongs, and others sold in offline and e-commerce stores. You can also support marine conservation activities by making donations to environmental organizations, community groups, or marine species rehabilitation centers.
"At the end of May, we started some of our actions such as beach clean-up at Muaya Beach Jimbaran, Bali which was carried out together with SMA 2 Kuta Selatan Students, Trash Hero Indonesia, Social Project Bali, Malu Dong, and local residents around Muaya Beach. Also planting 200 mangrove seedlings on Kelan Beach, Jimbaran, Bali in collaboration with Bendega and Emina Cosmetic Bali. We hope more youth communities will do similar things, not only on World Ocean Day but also at other times. "Every day is ocean day for us," said Echa Aryunisha, a representative from Marine Buddies Denpasar.
This action is a series of activities where the peak of the event will be held on June 8, 2024, at Amphitheater Living World Denpasar, Bali. Visitors will be invited to learn a lot about the importance of preserving the sea from the protection of coastal and marine ecosystems, marine species, and fisheries, to marine tourism. All of this education is delivered through various types of activities such as talk shows, drawing and coloring competitions, educational booths, exhibitions, art performances, and more.
"This campaign is not only carried out by Marine Buddies Denpasar but also Marine Buddies in Jakarta, Tangerang, Surabaya, Makassar, and Palopo. Friends can join marine buddies in the city to enliven this action for the sea," said Echa.
The campaign is also supported by Living World Denpasar, Bakti BCA, and Faber Castell.
