BOGOR CITY GOVERNMENT AND WWF-INDONESIA AGREE TO TACKLE PLASTIC WASTE IN BOGOR CITY
Bogor, June 11, 2025 - The Bogor City Government and WWF Indonesia Foundation signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) as a joint step in the sustainable management of plastic waste in Bogor City. The signing took place at TPS3R Mekarwangi, which is one of the pilot locations for community-based waste management in Bogor City.
.
This cooperation is a continuation of the collaboration that has been built since 2021 through the Plastic Smart Cities (PSC) initiative. Through the program, WWF-Indonesia and the Bogor City Government have jointly developed a comprehensive approach to address plastic waste issues, ranging from strengthening TPS3R institutions, policy advocacy, community education, to reducing waste generation from the source.
In his speech, the Mayor of Bogor, Dedie Abdu Rachim, emphasized that the waste problem, especially plastic waste, cannot be solved by the government alone. "Cross-sector cooperation is needed. Bogor City is committed to strengthening the waste management system from upstream to downstream, including efforts to prevent leakage of waste into rivers and the environment."
This is in accordance with one of the Bogor City Government's Strategic Programs, namely Healthy Bogor. The Bogor City Government targets an increase in cleaning services through the development and management of area-based waste with the 3R method, the provision of proper and adequate waste management fleets and facilities so as to realize Bogor City as a cleaner and less plastic waste city. Through this program, WWF-Indonesia supports the strategic program of the Bogor City government by increasing the 3R movement in technical assistance at the site level to increase the coverage of plastic waste management services.
During 2021 until now, WWF-Indonesia has been working with MRF Mekar Wangi, Istiqomah Clean Waste Bank, Yayasan Rumah Kedua, Yayasan Rekam Jejak Nusantara, Bank Sampah Kenanga, Bank Sampah Induk Kita, TPS3R Bantar Kemang, Bank Sampah Rangga Mekar, TPS3R Mutiara Bogor Raya, Kertabumi, Mountrash, Waste4Change and others. By way of institutional strengthening, management and management. WWF-Indonesia also conducts education to schools and also Youth Activists to invite young people to participate actively in reducing the use of plastic waste.
Waste management from the source and cross-sector collaboration are important foundations in waste reduction efforts in Bogor City. During the 2022-2024 period, the collaboration between Bogor City Government and WWF-Indonesia through this program recorded a reduction in plastic waste generation of 10,000 tons. This achievement is the result of increased waste management efforts from the source and strong collaboration. In the future, these results need to be strengthened in the waste management planning system and legislation, and the realization of the Smart Environment of Bogor city. PSC is committed to supporting the city's efforts.
Aditya Bayunanda, CEO of WWF-Indonesia, said. "WWF-Indonesia is working to reduce plastic waste as it impacts wildlife in nature. Over the past four years, we have built an integrated plastic waste management model, starting from waste management from the source, especially households, increasing the capacity of Waste Bank Units and Waste Bank Parent, involving community participation through TPS3R institutions, and assisting waste management policies. In fact, all of these plastic waste reduction activities are to prevent plastic leakage into nature so that it has an impact on wildlife and other biodiversity, ecosystem health, and also human health because microplastics have been found in human blood."
Aditya continued, "Today's MoU signing is not a starting point, but rather a continuation of strategic collaboration to make a broader impact. Bogor City proves that commitment to the environment must be realized through real solutions from upstream to downstream, through the No Plastic in Nature movement."
Waste management from the source and cross-sector collaboration are important foundations in waste reduction efforts in Bogor City, and this is a good example for other cities for plastic waste reduction efforts. In the future, this collaboration is expected to further strengthen the synergy between Bogor City Government, WWF-Indonesia, and all relevant stakeholders. Together, both organizations will continue to develop and implement innovative solutions for sustainable plastic waste management.
With the support of all parties, Bogor City has the potential to become a pioneer in effective community-based waste management, while inspiring other regions to follow its footsteps in maintaining cleanliness and environmental sustainability. This sustainable commitment is the foundation for realizing a clean, healthy and environmentally friendly city for future generations.
