ART EXPRESSION IN PUBLIC SPACE "COLOR FOR THE EARTH" TO REMIND US OF CLIMATE CRISIS
Holding Giant Mural & Book Sharing Action to Promote Climate Education, Inclusion, and Literacy
Jakarta, June 1, 2025 - WWF-Indonesia together with Earth Hour Indonesia, the Ministry of Education's Center for Bookkeeping (Pusbuk), and the INOVASI Program for Indonesian School Children (an Indonesian-Australian Government partnership) today held the "Warna untuk Bumi" Street Art Festival at the Car Free Day (CFD) area on Jalan Jenderal Sudirman, Jakarta, from 07.00 -09.00 WIB. The festival aims to remind the public about the climate crisis by combining artistic creativity, book readings and climate change education to build inclusive awareness and encourage real action from the younger generation.
.
This festival involves various communities and young volunteers from Earth Hour Indonesia, Literacy Community, and K-Pop Community who invite visitors to have casual discussions about inclusive learning and environmentally friendly lifestyles, and is expected to further encourage the role of the younger generation in inclusive education and climate action. And in the future, encourage greater action to slow down the climate crisis.
The "Colors for Earth" Street Art Festival presents a variety of activities that combine art, literacy, and messages to save the environment. The three main activities of the festival are:
Collaborative Mural: "Earth and Sustainable Education"
More than 100 youth and adults, including people with disabilities, participated in the creation of a five-meter collaborative mural. This activity symbolizes collective action across communities and backgrounds in voicing the importance of education that supports the preservation of the earth, thus bringing public attention to the climate crisis and the need for collective action.
Tiered Children's Book Sharing Action
The Ministry's Center for Bookkeeping (Pusbuk) distributed 200 packages of leveled non-text children's books to visitors. These books are available in Bahasa Indonesia and are designed to help children of different ages develop their literacy skills in a gradual and fun way.
Environment and Inclusion Themed Individual Painting and Coloring
A total of 250 participants, both children and adults, including people with disabilities, participated in batik and canvas coloring activities. This activity raised the themes of biodiversity, climate change and inclusive learning, as well as a space of expression for participants to express their hopes for the future of the earth.
Painting and Coloring Individuals on the Theme of Environment and Inclusion
The entire series of activities is packaged in an open and inclusive manner, to encourage the participation of the wider community in understanding climate issues and education through a fun and creative approach.
.
"Through 'Color for Earth', we want to remind the public that saving the environment is the responsibility of all, we cannot do it alone, small actions if done together will become big. When they join in coloring the mural and reading the book about the polluted ocean, we are planting the seeds of awareness and this will be carried into adulthood." said Ari Muhammad, Climate and Energy Manager of WWF Indonesia Foundation.
.
Quality, cheap and equitable children's books are needed to build literacy skills. It is books that will develop the reasoning, imagination and understanding that guide children to make decisions in the future. INOVASI's study shows that providing the right children's books, accompanied by teacher training, can improve literacy scores by up to 25%. The Ministry of Education and Culture, together with INOVASI, developed climate change-themed children's books that are contextual and educational so that they can reach children from various backgrounds," - Supriyatno, Head of the Ministry of Education and Culture's Center for Bookkeeping.
"The INOVASI program is a collaboration between the Governments of Indonesia and Australia to improve the quality of basic education, particularly in the areas of literacy, numeracy and character. By combining arts, literacy and inclusion, INOVASI builds inclusive learning ecosystems and strengthens children's climate resilience - so that they not only understand the challenges of climate change, but are also skilled and motivated to protect the environment and make schools safe and sustainable spaces for all children including children with disabilities," - Feiny Sentosa, Deputy Program Director of INOVASI.
The "Color for Earth" Street Art Festival places the younger generation as the main actors in voicing the importance of inclusion, literacy, and climate action. Their active involvement is a tangible manifestation of young people's contribution in building a society that is more aware and concerned about global issues.
A total of 100 young people from the Earth Hour Indonesia community, K-Pop community, and literacy community participated in a five-meter collaborative mural coloring activity. Through their visual works, the participants conveyed a strong message about the importance of sustainable education and earth protection.
Not only creating artworks, around 200 young volunteers from various communities also acted as the driving force of the action. They walked together in a peaceful action packaged in the form of a poster festival, carrying educational messages related to climate change, tolerance, and environmentally friendly lifestyles Through this participation, the younger generation shows that they are not only recipients of climate change impacts, but also active, creative, and passionate agents of change.
This street art festival was not only held in Jakarta, but was held simultaneously in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara, and in Sidoarjo, East Java on May 25.
