APSALOM KURANO, BUILDING SAWENDUI FROM SCRATCH
Apsalom Kurano is the head of Sawendui village, previously he was a resident of Aisau village. He has a large customary land area in Aisau village covering the area of Sawendui village now. With this large customary land, and its forest potential, it opened up opportunities for companies with Forest Entrepreneur Rights (HPH) to manage forests in Sawendui. Since the 1990s, Sawendui has been an HPH operation area, and Sawendui's rich Merbau forest is almost gone. "At that time, the forest was still intact, after the company cut it down, they did not choose, at will, so those that were still under the size were all cut," Apsalom recalled.
Merbau trees in the Sawendui area are one of the display trees that have the highest percentage of birds of paradise Minor Jobiensis as a place to play and mate. The birds of paradise that used to be a lot around the Sawendui forest also left due to the lack of availability of display trees, and not infrequently were hunted by unscrupulous HPH companies and the people around Sawendui Village.
After HPH left due to sustainable forest operations in 2005, Sawendui became nothing. Moreover, Sawendui is not an area that provides staple food, there is no sago hamlet as a food stock for the community. The people of Aisau village only use Sawendui as a place to fish to fulfill their daily needs. It is sad to see the condition of Sawendui village. How a village that was once rich, now seems to have nothing left. Apsalom Kurano, felt responsible for Sawendui's decline. With determination and little capital, he welcomed the government program for village expansion.
He took the initiative to make the Sawendui area a new empowered village. In 2014, he started by calling his closest relatives to settle in the Sawendui area. There were only about three houses at that time. With sincere intentions, he did not drag on in adversity, but rose quickly, saving the remaining forest, catching up with all the backwardness of Sawendui village.
Now 3 years later, improvements have been made. Since the presence of WWF-Indonesia in 2015, various recovery efforts have been made. Starting with Merbau and Matoa tree seedlings along the watershed to restore forest conditions in the future, sago seedlings along the Katwar river to support the community's food stock. Also as an alternative in an effort to improve the welfare of the community through the plantation sector, 256 cocoa seeds were sown, which were imported from Klaisu District, Jayapura Regency.
Carry out good intentions with full sincerity, then the universe will support it. The birds of paradise that left, are now back, returning to the remaining display trees, returning to their habitat to fulfill the call of the universe. No more hunting of this bird of paradise, no more excessive taking of natural products both in the sea and on land. Everything must be as needed. It is time for the economy of the Sawendui village community to grow. The woodworking business is running to meet the needs of the village. According to a member of the Kornu Multipurpose Cooperative, Henderkus Woriasi, who is engaged in the community forestry business, the village head (Apsalom Kurano) emphasized "the sale of furniture should not leave the village at this time, first fulfill the needs in the village because development starts from the village".
