50,000 BIKES FOR NATURE PROGRAM
Balance Sheet - In 2008, ABC News revealed a WWF report that stated the deforestation process in one province of Sumatra, producing greenhouse gases comparable to the world's major industrialized countries. Emissions from deforestation, particularly peatlands composed of layers of semi-decayed vegetation, have made Indonesia the third largest carbon emitter in the world, after the United States and China.
A 2009 CNN report revealed that 85% of Sumatra's forest area has disappeared. The remaining area continues to decrease at an astonishing rate. Imagine, according to Greenpeace and FAO, an area the size of SO football field is lost every hour. LKBN Antara (October 2009) stated that Jakarta is the third most polluted city in the world.
Many countries have committed to policies and invested billions of dollars in meeting the challenge of reducing the environmental impact of pollution. The largest gathering of heads of state in history was held in December 2009 at the Copenhagen Climate Change Summit, with more than 120 heads of government in attendance. The summit resulted in the Copenhagen Accord.
As part of his commitment to the Copenhagen Accord, even President Yudhoyono stated, ""Indonesia has committed to reducing emissions by 26% relative to the business world by 2020. We will do this on a self-sustaining basis and the limits will be announced shortly."" With the help of our international colleagues, we were able to reduce our emissions by 41%.
Wanting to play its part in protecting nature, PT Ultrajaya launched a program aimed at gaining as many commitments as possible to use a bicycle at least once a week. By doing so, it is expected to reduce fuel consumption and subsequently reduce pollution.
The program was launched in the form of a website and cycling events in 5 cities with the aim of getting 50,000 people to commit to this social cause.
Turns out, the response was really encouraging. More than 65,000 people across Indonesia have joined the cycling movement held in Bandung, Medan, Surabaya and Balikpapan. Jakarta was chosen as the last city to hold this event on Sunday (8/8) at the West Plaza of Gelora Bung Karno, Senayan. As a form of appreciation for nature, Teh Kotak and PT Ultrajaya, in every event of the ""50,000 Bicycles for Nature"" Movement, always coordinate and support reforestation and nature rehabilitation programs of local governments by donating plant seeds. This time in Jakarta, Teh Kotak and PT Ultrajaya will donate 1,000 plant seeds to the DKI Regional Government. PT Ultrajaya launches this activity, to raise awareness in protecting the environment, also reminding us to take care of this nature, if we want to get the best from nature, a.
