2ND INTERNATIONAL WILDLIFE SYMPOSIUM WILDLIFE AND PEOPLE: STRENGTHENING THE CAPACITY TO PROMOTE HARMONY
Sumatra is recognized as one of the world's high biodiversity hot spots. The island is home to 196 species of mammals, 22 of which are found on no other island in Indonesia (Rhee et al, 2004), as well as four critically endangered mammals: the Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae), Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus), Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis), Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii).
There have been many studies and scientific publications produced from this island that are detailed in all aspects of ecology, social, and policy, all of which boil down to a great desire to preserve the heritage of its natural wealth and sustainable use. Unfortunately, there are still many obstacles to achieving these great hopes. This is due to the lack of cooperation and efforts to support each other and to be supported by existing resources, both human and otherwise. Meanwhile, at present, the island with its rich wildlife is facing various threats that can even cause enormous damage or extinction.
Reflecting on the above problems, one of the efforts we want to make is to strengthen all parties to be able to fully contribute and be integrated to save this island and on a wider scale. Therefore, one of the concrete initiatives is to hold the 2nd International Wildlife Symposium entitled Wildlife and People: Strengthening the Capacity to Promote Harmony which will be held on November 1 - 4, 2015 at Andalas University Limau Manih Campus, Padang, West Sumatra.
This event is expected to encourage more people to care and engage with current issues related to biodiversity in Sumatra and on a wider scale, as well as to increase the capacity and integration of each party involved in wildlife conservation. The first symposium was successfully held at Riau University. The second symposium will be held at Andalas University on November 1 - 4, 2015 with scientists and conservationists as the main target, as well as other stakeholders in Sumatra and related parties at the national and international levels.
The urgency of this activity is based on the fact that there have been many research activities, publications, scientific exploration and conservation carried out by various parties, but still based on their respective needs and urgency. For this reason, it is necessary to harmonize all these parties, so as to achieve the big goal of preserving wildlife and diversity.
The big goal of this symposium is to encourage real action in wildlife conservation efforts by various parties that are harmonized and integrated, especially for the island of Sumatra and on a wider scale.
