Head of PR & Strategic Communication
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
To lead and drive an integrated, strategic communications function that strengthens WWF-Indonesia’s reputation, influence, and public engagement in advancing conservation outcomes.
The role ensures that communications effectively support policy influence, behaviour change, education and youth engagement, and resource mobilisation by delivering compelling, evidence-based narratives and campaigns. It positions WWF Indonesia as a trusted and authoritative voice on environmental issues, while aligning with WWF’s global priorities and “One WWF” approach.
As a member of the senior leadership ecosystem, the Head of Strategic Communications provides strategic counsel on reputation, stakeholder engagement, and risk, ensuring that all communications are impactful, coherent, and contribute directly to WWF-Indonesia’s mission and long-term conservation goals.
The position oversees all communications functions—including media engagement, digital strategy, internal communications, and campaign delivery—driving consistency, innovation, and measurable impact across the organization.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Planning
- Lead the development and implementation of WWF-Indonesia’s integrated communications strategy aligned with national priorities and the global WWF Network.
- Translate conservation strategy into clear communications priorities, narratives, and engagement approaches.
- Position WWF-Indonesia as a leading, credible, and influential organization shaping public discourse, policy agendas, and environmental decision-making in Indonesia.
- Strengthen WWF-Indonesia’s thought leadership by proactively placing the organization at the forefront of national conversations on conservation, climate, and sustainability.
- Ensure WWF-Indonesia remains relevant by connecting conservation issues to national priorities, socio-economic contexts, and the everyday lives of people.
- Leverage youth engagement and environmental education as strategic pillars to drive long-term behavior change, public awareness, and future environmental leadership.
- Ensure communications contributes directly to policy influence, public & resource mobilization, and conservation impact. Anticipate political, media, and societal trends; proactively identify opportunities and risks.
- Act as a strategic advisor to the CEO and Senior Leadership Team on communications, reputation, and stakeholder positioning.
Strategic Positioning, Messaging & Campaign Integration
- Define and safeguard WWF-Indonesia’s institutional voice, ensuring alignment with global WWF brand and narrative frameworks.
- Lead the development of compelling, science-based, and audience-centered messaging that is relevant to national priorities and public concerns.
- Oversee the design and delivery of integrated campaigns (advocacy, behavior change, fundraising, awareness).
- Ensure consistency of messaging across all platforms, programs, and partnerships.
- Integrate communications across conservation pillars and functions (policy, programs, fundraising, partnerships).
- Package and adapt communication assets for different audiences (public, policymakers, donors, individual supporters, and private sector) ensuring cultural and contextual relevance.
Media Relations, Public Affairs, & Stakeholder Engagement
- Develop and execute proactive media and public affairs strategies to influence public discourse and decision-makers.
- Ensure WWF-Indonesia’s positioning remains timely and relevant within national debates, policy developments, and emerging public issues.
- Build and maintain high-level relationships with media, editors, influencers, and thought leaders.
- Strengthen WWF-Indonesia’s engagement with policymakers, government institutions, and advocacy coalitions.
- Lead executive communications (CEO positioning, speeches, op-eds, media briefings).
- Identify and leverage high-impact platforms (events, forums, partnerships) to amplify WWF’s voice.
- Act as lead on crisis communications and reputational risk management, including preparedness and response.
Risk Management, Crisis Communications & Safeguarding
- Lead the identification, assessment, and management of communications and reputational risks, including politically sensitive issues, program controversies, and stakeholder conflicts.
- Develop and maintain crisis communications protocols, including preparedness plans, escalation pathways, and response frameworks aligned with WWF Network standards.
- Advise senior leadership on risk mitigation strategies related to public positioning, campaigns, and partnerships.
- Ensure all communications adhere to WWF Environmental and Social Safeguards, including human rights, Indigenous Peoples, and gender considerations.
- Monitor media and public sentiment to identify emerging risks and shifts in public expectations and relevance.
- Coordinate with Legal, Safeguards, and Program teams to ensure risk-informed communications approaches.
Digital Strategy, Content Ecosystem & Innovation
- Lead WWF-Indonesia’s digital communications strategy, ensuring strong presence and influence across platforms.
- Oversee development of high-quality, impactful, and engaging content across channels.
- Ensure content and channel strategies remain relevant to evolving audience behaviors, digital trends, and platform dynamics.
- Promote innovation in storytelling (multimedia, data visualization, influencers, immersive formats).
- Ensure integration between digital, campaigns, and fundraising efforts.
- Explore and adopt new tools, platforms, and technologies to enhance communications effectiveness.
Youth Engagement & Environmental Education (ESD)
- Provide strategic direction for WWF-Indonesia’s Youth and Environmental Education (ESD) initiatives to strengthen public awareness, behavior change, and long-term conservation impact.
- Ensure youth engagement and education programs are aligned with WWF-Indonesia’s communications, advocacy, and conservation priorities.
- Position WWF-Indonesia as a leading organization in environmental education and youth mobilization in Indonesia.
- Integrate youth voices, storytelling, and participation into campaigns and public engagement strategies.
- Foster partnerships with schools, universities, youth networks, and educational institutions.
- Promote innovative approaches to engage younger audiences and future environmental leaders.
Monitoring, Evaluation, Reporting & Knowledge Management
- Develop and implement a communications Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning (MEL) framework aligned with WWF standards.
- Define and track KPIs (reach, engagement, influence, behavior change, policy impact, fundraising contribution).
- Monitor media coverage, digital performance, and campaign effectiveness using analytics tools.
- Track audience relevance indicators (e.g., engagement quality, sentiment, resonance) to inform adaptive strategies.
- Track reputational indicators and risk signals as part of performance monitoring.
- Produce regular strategic reports for CEO, senior leadership, donors, and WWF Network requirements.
- Capture lessons learned, best practices, and case studies to strengthen institutional knowledge.
- Ensure continuous improvement through data-driven decision-making and adaptive strategies.
WWF Network Alignment, Capacity Building & Partnerships
- Ensure alignment with WWF global communications strategies, campaigns, and “One WWF” positioning.
- Collaborate closely with WWF International and regional offices on global and regional initiatives.
- Contribute Indonesian insights, content, and impact stories to global platforms.
- Ensure global narratives are adapted to remain locally relevant within the Indonesian context.
- Strengthen internal communications capacity by providing guidance, tools, and training to program teams.
- Build and manage strategic partnerships with media, platforms, agencies, and content producers.
- Actively participate in WWF global communications communities of practice and knowledge-sharing platforms.
People Management, Culture & Resource Stewardship
- Lead, manage, and develop a high-performing Strategic Communications Unit.
- Provide coaching, mentoring, and structured performance management to team members.
- Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning.
- Ensure effective workforce planning, resource allocation, and budget management.
- Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and staff well-being within the team.
- Build a strong, connected team culture aligned with WWF values and ways of working.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, International Relations, Marketing, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in strategic communications, external relations, or public affairs, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
- Proven experience leading national and/or international communications campaigns, policy communications, and crisis reputation management.
- Demonstrated experience in environmental, sustainability, or social impact sectors is highly desirable.
- Experience working within international or matrix organizations is an advantage.
