WWF’S CAMERA TRAP RECORDED PICTURE OF A JAVAN RHINO AND ITS NEWBORN CALF
A new picture of Javan rhino, a mother and a newborn calf, was recently recorded using a camera trap set up by WWF scientists in Ujung Kulon National Park. The camera which was set up in Citadahan area on November 2007 shows a calf with an estimated age 4 to 6 months next to its mother. The calf presence was first identified on October 30, 2007 when WWF and partners found its foot print sized 15/16 cm around Citadahan watershed area. The finding shows a sign that the endangered Javan Rhino is breeding at the park. Four newborn Javan Rhino babies were previously identified in the park on July 2006. Ujung Kulon National Park is the most viable habitat for the endangered Javan rhino, it is estimated there are only 50 individuals in the park.
