WWF BECOMES A TRUSTED DONATION CHANNEL FOR THE PEOPLE OF INDONESIA
By: Ciptanti Putri
As the oldest nature conservation organization in Indonesia, WWF-Indonesia is a trusted choice for the community to channel their concern. Evidently, there are now 67,000 supporters supporting WWF-Indonesia's conservation work in all corners of the archipelago.
"Starting from the conservation of the One-horned Rhino in Ujung Kulon National Park, WWF now works with the government and corporations in all its programs. This includes the people who live around conservation areas and urban communities, because they indirectly determine the success of our work in the field," explained Devy Suradji, Marketing Director of WWF-Indonesia, in the second pre-event leading up to the "Jakarta Marathon 2014". Sunday (28/9) at the parking lot of Sarinah Thamrin shopping center, Jakarta. On that occasion, WWF-Indonesia became one of the channels in the "Indo Kasih" donation platform that initiated "running for charity" at the "Jakarta Marathon 2014" on October 26.
Devy continued, the conservation efforts undertaken by WWF-Indonesia for endangered animals ultimately boils down to saving the nature that is their home. "That's why we are actively educating the public to live a green lifestyle. For example, sorting waste by type and using certified products that are guaranteed not to come from natural forests." People's choices in their daily consumption can 'force' producers not to use processed materials from sources that interfere with the preservation of nature.
"We may not be directly affected if tigers, rhinos, elephants, orangutans or turtles become extinct. However, their absence will disrupt the ecosystem. For example, in the absence of turtles, the jellyfish population will increase. As a result, the production of some of the fish that feed us and provide livelihoods for fishermen may drastically decrease, or even disappear. This is exacerbated by the fact that human needs are currently exceeding the earth's carrying capacity, which is 1.5 times its natural resources. We spread information like this to our loyal supporters on various occasions," said Devy.
On that occasion, Devy also expressed his gratitude for the trust of the supporters who continue to support the conservation efforts undertaken by WWF-Indonesia. "A few months ago we made a campaign about waste on the Paloh Coast, the longest turtle nesting beach in Indonesia. In just three months, we managed to collect hundreds of millions of rupiah in donations from our supporters. The money was then bought for a plastic waste shredding machine."
Devy said, WWF-Indonesia always opens the door for the wider community to support various conservation programs, both in the form of monetary donations and labor support. "Likewise with collaboration and synergy with various organizations that have a concern for nature conservation. This is the time for us to join hands to realize a better earth," he concluded.
