SKIPJACK FISHERY BMP (POLE AND LINE FISHING)
Author: Saraswati Adityarini (Fisheries Officer, WWF-Indonesia Lesser Sunda Program)
Better Management Practices (BMP), Small-scale Fisheries Guidance Series, Skipjack Fishing with Pole and Line Fishing, is one of the capture fisheries guidelines compiled by WWF-Indonesia Fisheries Team and published in 2015. "Skipjack BMP with Pole and Line" can be used as a guide by fishermen in catching skipjack using more environmentally friendly practices. This is not only to maintain the sustainability of the marine ecosystem and the sustainability of fisheries resources, but also to ensure the sustainability of fishermen's livelihoods.
The development of "Skipjack BMPs with Pole and Line Fishing Lines" was conducted through various stages, namely:
- Data collection from the field and mentoring activities of skipjack fishermen with pole and line in East Flores, Flores Sea and Bone Bay;
- Discussion with the government, several skipjack experts (specifically pole and line fishing gear), and academics;
- Literature study of other research results.
This BMP is a flexible (living document), which will continue to be refined in accordance with developments in the field, as well as input from relevant parties. "Skipjack BMP with Pole and Line Fishing Rods" is one of WWF-Indonesia's contributions in supporting sustainable fisheries management in Indonesia.
