SAMBOJA FOREST GUARDIAN ALA CIKAL SCHOOL
By: Anastasia Joanita
"In the dense jungle of East Kalimantan, the Samboja Forest is a natural treasure and home to many animals that live in peace with each other. One day, a family consisting of a father along with his daughters Zio and Zia went on an adventure to Samboja Forest. They camped around Samboja Forest and enjoyed the incredible natural scenery that they had never seen before. While camping, a forest fire broke out and Zio and Zia were separated from their father. Zio and Zia try to find their father's trail into the forest and on their adventure, they meet a group of friendly animals - the rhino, Rory, Penelope the pygmy elephant, Baba the proboscis monkey, Oscar - the orangutan, and the bear, Boris who have been living in Samboja Forest for a long time. This group of animals helps Zio and Zia to find their father. On the way to find their father, Zio and Zia develop a friendship with the animals. They protect and take care of each other until Zio and Zia are finally reunited with their father."
Yes, that's a piece of the story entitled "Samboja Troop" in an art performance played by Cikal School students on April 12, 2014 at the Djakarta Theater, Taman Ismail Marzuki, Jakarta. Around 600 CIKAL School students - ranging from playground classes to secondary level - were involved in the art performance which was divided into three performance sessions, each lasting two hours.
"The enthusiasm and positive support in this activity is not only from the students, but also from the parents. This event, which is held annually by Cikal School, is the most anticipated activity for everyone involved in the Cikal community," said Putri Diah, CIKAL School Teacher for GM Marketing Division. Not to forget, various exhibitions of students' artwork were also shown in the form of paintings and other handicrafts at the event.
This art show is one of a series of activities held by CIKAL School in the "Playground of Borneo" program, which is a collaborative program between Cikal School and WWF-Indonesia in order to support environmental conservation in Borneo. This is the second time for CIKAL School to collaborate with WWF Indonesia. Previously, in 2012, these two institutions had collaborated for a rhino conservation campaign themed "Playground of Ujung Kulon".
As for the form of cooperation between the two parties, CIKAL School will provide donations through WWF-Indonesia to support environmental conservation and education activities for school students in the Borneo region with the concept of the "Pustaka Borneo" program. The donation is in the form of solar panels - which will provide longer lighting at night - as well as reading books.
The arts and cultural creativity carried out by Cikal School is expected to not only benefit students in Borneo, but also inspire all students in Indonesia to show more concern for others and nature.
