KKP AND WWF HOLD ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY FISHING GEAR COMPETITION
In the last two decades, fishing gear has evolved rapidly in a variety of forms and names, all of which refer to the nature of fishing with the goal of increasing productivity while not considering its impact on the environment.
The development of modern fishing technology is also suspected to have caused the fisheries crisis directly and indirectly, coupled with the accidental capture of other species that are part of the food chain in the ecosystem.
It is important to maintain populations of these protected species without compromising the economic value of the fishing industry. High levels of bycatch of key protected species can lead to the destruction of marine biodiversity and a solution must be found.
The capture of protected and endangered animals such as turtles, sharks, marine mammals such as dolphins, as well as the waste of fish resources by catching juvenile fish and damage to marine ecosystem habitats due to the operation of fishing gear, is a shared responsibility.
Inspired by the international program Smart Gear Competition, the Directorate of Fishing Vessels and Fishing Gear (KAPI) of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF) together with WWF-Indonesia invites fisheries actors, researchers, research institutions and for the general public to jointly provide ideas and innovations to the problems of fishing activities for the common interest.
Please read the terms of the competition below.
