BMP SHELLFISH FISHERY
Author: Davidson Rato Noto (Capture Fisheries Officer, WWF-Indonesia)
Better Management Practices (BMP), Small-scale Fisheries Guidance Series, Shellfish Fisheries, is one of the capture fisheries guidelines compiled by WWF-Indonesia's Fisheries Team and published in 2015. The Scallop BMPs can be used as a guide for scallop fishers in conducting fishing in a more environmentally friendly manner. This is not only in the interest of preserving marine ecosystems and the sustainability of fisheries resources, but also ensures the sustainability of the livelihoods of scallop fishers themselves.
The preparation of the Scallop BMP was carried out through various stages, namely:
- Data collection from the field and mentoring activities for clam fishers in Surabaya and Sidoarjo;
- Discussions with relevant government, shellfish experts, and academics; and
- Literature study of other research results.
This BMP is a flexible (living document), which will continue to be refined in accordance with developments in the field and input from relevant parties. The mussel BMP is one of WWF-Indonesia's contributions in supporting sustainable fisheries management in Indonesia.
