INVITE THE PUBLIC TO CLAP 30 TIMES #30CLAPS TO SAVE THE SUMATRAN TIGER
Jakarta, July 28, 2017. In the framework of Global Tiger Day 2017, WWF-Indonesia in collaboration with Central Park Mall, Neo Soho Mal, Senayan City, Kuningan City, The Plaza Balikpapan, APL Tower, and Soho Capital invites visitors to save the Sumatran Tiger (Phantera tigris sumatrae) by clapping 30 times #30Claps to dry hands after washing hands. This is based on the results of research conducted by WWF-Indonesia in collaboration with Hakuhodo creative agency. The results of the study proved that Indonesians living in big cities (around 54% of Indonesians live in big cities) have a habit of spending three sheets of tissue to dry their hands.
"People are not aware that the habit of using excessive tissue and not labeled FSC can contribute to forest destruction in Indonesia, the use of tissue products that are not environmentally friendly will encourage the expansion of plantation forest areas by clearing natural forests for protected animal habitats such as tigers," said Aditya Bayunanda, Director of Policy, Sustainability and Transformation. Aditya added, "WWF invites Indonesians to change small habits with #30Claps to dry their hands, in order to preserve the Sumatran Tiger."
As long as the tissue used is not tissue with the FSC logo, it is likely that the tissue is produced without paying attention to the rules of sustainability of wildlife protection, respect for the rights of indigenous and local communities, and protection of peat.
It is better not to use tissues to dry your hands and clap 30 times while demanding that the tissues provided in public spaces are tissues that have the FSC logo.
"As a shopping destination in the Jakarta area that is very concerned about the survival of nature, we invite mall visitors to participate with the #30claps movement to dry their hands after activities in the toilet," said Selvyn, as General Operations Manager of Central Park and Neo Soho Mall. Selvyn also explained, "We will start the movement of sticking #30claps stickers on every toilet so that it becomes a reminder and at the end of the year we will count the number of tissues that we have managed to save."
Of the forest loss figures above, the main cause is land use change from forest to plantation and forest plantation. More than 7 million hectares of Sumatra's tiger habitat has been converted into plantations, and industrial timber plantations (paper and tissue industries). The high rate of forest conversion into plantations and forest plantations is due to the increasing demand for commodities derived from these forests.
The current demand for tissue at Central Park Mall, Neo Soho Mall, APL Tower and Soho Capital is 2250 kg. The campaign is targeted to reduce tissue usage by 60 percent within the next six months. In addition, from July - December there will be several live activations such as flash mobs and others. Visitors can also directly participate in saving tigers by donating through tiger-shaped piggy banks placed at several points in the mall and also adopting the 'Tiger Papier Marche' which is on display at the mall.
The Sumatran tiger is listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). Currently the Sumatran Tiger population numbers 371 individuals** in the tropical forests of Sumatra. With #30Claps you are helping to save Indonesia's Forests, let's start a new habit, clap after washing your hands. Not only to save more trees and forests but also make our day more fun!
