THE IMPACT OF EACH REGION IS DIFFERENT
JAKARTA, KOMPAS - The study of vulnerability and "adaptation to climate change on Lombok Island conducted by the Ministry of Environment and The Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Technische Zusammenarbeit Indonesia concluded that the impact of climate change in one area is different from the impact in other areas. Different impacts require different adaptations
The study of vulnerability and adaptation to climate change on Lombok Island in 2008 and 2009 showed that disaster vulnerability and disaster risk in five districts / cities, all on Lombok Island, were different. The study, among others, analyzed the impact of climate change on water resources, the agricultural sector, and coastal areas.
Deputy for Improvement of Natural Resources Conservation and Environmental Damage Control of the Ministry of Environment Masnellyarti Hilman said the study was important for planning development. ""In the past, local governments stated that all communities in coastal areas were vulnerable to climate change. It turns out that the level of impact of sea level rise in a number of areas on Lombok Island is not the same,"" Masnellyarti said.
She also stated the importance of adaptation in the agricultural sector. ""The start of the rainy season has shifted from November to January. That makes farmers' planting calendar must be changed,"" she said
Researcher from the National Survey and Mapping Coordinating Agency, Ibnu Sofian, confirmed that sea level rise on the north coast of Lombok is different from the south coast. "In the north it is 6 mm per year, while in the south it is 4 mm per year. The level of vulnerability is different, let alone the risk in other areas, the risk is even more different, influenced by the speed of the increase, current patterns, sedimentation on the coastline, and the strength and weakness of the waves,"" he said.
Team leader Djoko Santoso Abdi Suroso said the study had been adopted by the West Nusa Tenggara Provincial Medium-Term Development Plan document
