AURELIE MOEREMANS: EXPLORING THE LAND OF PAPUA AS MONA WARRIOR WWF-INDONESIA
Aurélie Moeremans, a 29-year-old actress and singer, recently visited Papua, Indonesia, from November 27 to 30. The visit was part of her initiative as a MoNa Warrior for WWF Indonesia Foundation, demonstrating her deep commitment to environmental conservation and community empowerment.
Play to Sereh Village and Holey Narey Learning Center
During her time in Papua, Aurélie visited several key locations. In Sentani, she visited the Holey Narey Learning Center-also located in the same area as WWF-Indonesia's Papua office, SD Inpres Sereh, and Posyandu Otauw in Sereh Village. Activities at the school were exciting, with MoNa teaching about biodiversity and Aurélie taking part in a symbolic planting of the school grounds. In addition, campaigns and education at the posyandu on nutritious food were conducted with posyandu cadres, pregnant women and children including the provision of supplementary food items, namely green beans and Holey Narey milk, which comes from the Sentani language, meaning "a good and comfortable living environment". It serves not only as an information center, but also as a place to learn about Papuan biodiversity and nature conservation. Here, Aurélie took part in the inauguration of the supporting facilities at Holey Narey which include a podcast room, library, MSME shop and greenhouse. The inauguration event was also followed by a talk show titled "Green Lifestyle and Youth Action on Environmental Issues", where Aurélie shared the stage with young Papuan leaders and environmental activists.
Hotep, Cenderawasih, and Sawe Suma Village Ecotourism
One of the highlights of Aurélie's visit was an ecotourism tour of birdwatching birds of paradise and sago processing in Sawe Suma Village. Birdwatching cenderawasih is one of the main attractions in the Hotep forest in the area. Indigenous communities, local government and WWF-Indonesia are working together to develop this destination, focusing on bird of paradise conservation, educational tourism, local food culinary and cultural attractions. In Sawe Suma Village, Aurélie also visited Sekolah Lapang, an initiative established in 2021 through the Margareth A Cargil Philanthropies (MACP) Project and supported by the Ingerwewal Women's Group as a companion in the Voices for Just Climate Action (VCA) program with the aim of empowering women, youth groups, indigenous peoples and children for collective action in the sustainable management of natural resources and environmental services in an inclusive, self-reliant manner, while maintaining the culture and identity of indigenous peoples.
Collective Action for Conservation
The importance of collaboration in conservation efforts was the main focus of Aurélie's visit. Together with 6 other selected MoNa, they conducted a series of activities that were not only educational but also fun. From cooking demonstrations of sago preparations, eating nutritious and delicious sago worms, planting sago saplings to participating in important discussions, Aurélie and her team sought to amplify the message of the importance of conserving nature and biodiversity in an inclusive manner.
