PT SMI AND WWF-INDONESIA COLLABORATE TO STRENGTHEN THE INTEGRATION OF NATURE IN BUSINESS PRACTICES
Friday, August 15, 2025 - PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur (Persero) (PT SMI) and WWF-Indonesia officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that marks the beginning of a strategic collaboration to encourage the integration of natural aspects into sustainability practices and business governance. The signing of the agreement was carried out by the President Director of PT SMI, Reynaldi Hermansjah, and the CEO of WWF-Indonesia, Aditya Bayunanda, and was also witnessed by Joko Siswanto, Head of the Directorate of Sustainable Finance at the Financial Services Authority (OJK). The signing ceremony was held at the PT SMI office, Sahid Sudirman Center Building, Jakarta, on Friday, August 15, 2025.
The agreement between PT SMI and WWF-Indonesia is based on the high dependence of economic activities on nature. Laporan World Economic Forum menyebutkan bahwa lebih dari 50% Produk Domestik Bruto (PDB) global, atau setara US$ 44 triliun, sangat bergantung pada jasa ekosistem
"As a Development Finance Institution (DFI), PT SMI recognizes the dependency and impact of our activities on nature. This collaboration is important to help us better understand, plan, and implement business practices that contribute positively to nature and sustainable development in Indonesia," said Reynaldi Hermansjah, President Director of PT SMI.
As part of this collaboration, PT SMI and WWF-Indonesia will also work together on capacity building, technical assistance, preparation, and distribution of communication materials to support financial regulators in shaping the regulatory ecosystem by integrating nature aspects, as well as exploration of other potential synergies in supporting sustainable infrastructure projects in Indonesia. In this context, integrating nature aspects into environmental, social, and governance (ESG) policies and practices is an important step to strengthen the resilience of business and financial systems, one of which is by applying the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) framework in sustainability reports.
Globally, the TNFD has been developed as a reporting framework that encourages companies and financial institutions to identify and disclose their dependencies and impacts on nature, including the risks and opportunities they pose. This collaboration makes PT SMI the first financing institution to be piloting TNFD in Indonesia, and demonstrates a strong commitment to pioneering the implementation of nature-related reporting standards in the development finance sector.
"Over the past 3 years, WWF-Indonesia has also continued to collaborate with OJK in providing training related to the integration of climate aspects to the entire banking sector in Indonesia. The collaboration with PT SMI is a bigger step in WWF-Indonesia's commitment to support the transformation of financial institutions that pay more attention to environmental aspects. Through piloting TNFD reporting in this collaboration, the impact of infrastructure development on biodiversity is expected to be mitigated and can encourage wider adoption of TNFD in Indonesia, especially in the financial sector," said Aditya Bayunanda, CEO of WWF-Indonesia.
This step is also in line with national regulations that are gradually implemented in the areas of financial services, issuers, and public companies. OJK has stipulated that PT SMI will be one of the institutions required to adopt the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) S1 and S2 standards, which include a common framework for disclosing sustainability-related (ESG) risks and opportunities from 2028. Furthermore, this is a concrete action of PT SMI as one of the members of the Indonesian Sustainable Finance Initiative (IKBI), which promotes best practices in the implementation of sustainable finance.
"Initiation of this nature-related reporting framework is very well done to see the feasibility and readiness of the financial industry in the field, especially to test the implementation of the Sustainability Disclosure Standard (SPK) 1 framework recently launched by the Sustainability Standards Council (DSK) of the Indonesian Institute of Accountants (IAI). OJK hopes that this learning can be a good example for all other Financial Services Institutions," concluded Joko Siswanto, Head of the Directorate of Sustainable Finance, OJK.
Today, TNFD has been adopted by more than 500 companies and financial institutions around the world. Thus, the implementation of the TNFD framework is an important strategy for PT SMI to prepare for advanced reporting standards, strengthen investor confidence, open new funding opportunities, and support national economic resilience.
