WWF AND MINISTRY OF MARITIME AFFAIRS AND FISHERIES TO STRENGTHEN HUMAN RESOURCES WITHIN MARINE AND FISHERIES SECTOR
In an effort to improve the human resource competence in the marine and fisheries sector in order to accomplish national goal of food security through blue economy based industrialization, WWF-Indonesia is looking to strengthen the cooperation with Agency for Human Resource Development of Marine Affairs and Fisheries through the signing of cooperation agreement on sustainable and responsible human resource development in managing the marine resources.
The signing ceremony of cooperation agreement which took place in Mina Bahari III building of Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries was done between Secretary of Agency for Human Resource Development of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Dr. Rina and Director of WWF-Indonesia Coral Triangle Program Mr. Wawan Ridwan in a series of activities of Launching of Marine and Fisheries Technopark which inaugurated by Minister of Maritime Affairs Susi Pudjiastuti on June 25th 2015.
The effort to produce a competent human resources and to expand business in marine sector is a part of Nawacita program. “Real action of human resources development through education, training and workshop in order to support scientific and innovation based people’s economic development” said Susi during the inauguration of the technopark in Jakarta.
“WWF-Indonesia is fully aware of the importance of the cooperation effort to improve the competent human resource who will then be expected to be an agent of change in building the marine and fisheries sector in the future” stated Wawan Ridwan. “Aside from that, in facing the globalisation era in the level of regional and international, the involvement of whole parties to support productive, efficient, competent, and sustainable marine resources management is integral to the national marine sector economic growth” he added.
Through this cooperation, WWF-Indonesia and Agency for Human Resource Development of Marine Affairs and Fisheries will collaborate for three years to try to produce highly-competent human resources through capacity building programs such as education, training and workshop. To achieve that goal, this cooperation program is contained of 7 scopes among others: Development of standardised competency and certification; curriculum and modul arrangement and development; cooperation network development; and data & information exchange.
This cooperation agreement is a follow-up action from Memorandum of Understanding between WWF-Indonesa and Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries which was signed by CEO of WWF-Indonesia and Secretary-general of Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries on October 17th 2014 last year. The agreement is meant to strengthen the effort of Indonesian government in fulfilling relevant policies of food security, sovereignty and sustainability on marine products, especially within the Coral Triangle Region.
Working scope of WWF-Indonesia Coral Triangle Program is distributed across Indonesian seas while also consists of several inland water areas. For rich marine biodiversity-related areas especially conservation-area management, WWF-Indonesia is focusing on centre for biodiversities such as Sunda Banda Seascape, Bird Head Seascape and Sulu Sulawesi Marine Ecoregion. Whereas for fisheries-related areas, WWF-Indonesia divides its areas according to Fisheries Management Areas (FMAs), especially in implementing the newly Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) model.
