WWF-INDONESIA PANDA MOBILE COLLABORATION AND PRASETIYA MULYA AIESEC
By: Muhamad Gian Giffar (Volunteer Panda Mobile)
Panda Mobile WWF-Indonesia had the opportunity to conduct activities at Cikal Harapan Elementary School, Tangerang. Collaborating with AIESEC Prasetiya Mulya University, the activity held for four days (February 12-15, 2018) aims to introduce and provide education related to the ocean and the environment to all students from grade one to grade five.
WWF-Indonesia and AIESEC Prasetiya Mulya's Panda Mobile activities were filled with presentation sessions, movie watching, and Q&A in each classroom. AIESEC Prasetiya Mulya opened the activity by giving a presentation on the culture of the home country of the student exchange participants and a presentation on the marine conservation project organized by the AIESEC Prasetiya Mulya team.
The activity then continued with a presentation by the Panda Mobile team about WWF-Indonesia and its history. The students were also given an explanation of the six animal species that are the main focus of WWF-Indonesia's conservation program. They were very enthusiastic about the topic and asked several questions. "What will happen if the whale shark becomes extinct?" asked a 4th grade elementary school student. "The ecosystem in the ocean will be unbalanced and the ocean might get dirtier because whale sharks are important indicators that determine whether the ocean is clean or not. Whale sharks can only be seen in clean ocean waters," replied one of Panda Mobile's volunteers.
During the four days, the Panda Mobile truck was only present on day 3. The presence of Panda Mobile was welcomed with great excitement by the students because they could do outdoor activities. The activity began with the "Ram Sam Sam" dance guided by the Panda Mobile volunteers and assisted by the Prasetiya Mulya AIESEC team. Next, Mr. Ryan, a storyteller from Panda Mobile told a story about a sea turtle trapped in plastic waste that humans throw into the sea.
After listening to the story, the outdoor activity continued by playing games around the Panda Mobile truck, such as crawling turtles, exploring Papua, and watching the movie "See How It Feels to Be an Ocean Animal Stuck in a Plastic Bag". The activity was even more exciting because AIESEC Prasetya Mulya's exchange participant students also joined in educating the students of SD Islam Cikal Harapan.
The teachers from SD Islam Cikal Harapan really appreciated the series of activities organized by WWF-Indonesia's Panda Mobile and AIESEC Prasetiya Mulya. They hope that the activities that have been given to the students can make them realize the importance of protecting the environment. One way is by not littering. The teachers also hope that similar activities can be carried out again in the future.
