WWF AND NU INAUGURATE COOPERATION TO ADDRESS CLIMATE CHANGE
"Jakarta, Indonesia - At the recent Climate Change Summit in Cancun, Mexico, which resulted in the Cancun Agreement, it was clearly stated that adaptation activities should receive the same priority as mitigation activities. Along with Indonesia's mitigation commitment mentioned by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, which is to reduce 26% of Greenhouse Gas emissions from "Business as Usual" until 2020, Indonesia is expected to also produce a National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy. National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy.
Supporting the agreement and commitment of the Indonesian government, WWF-Indonesia and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as well as launch the book "The Best Way for Communities in Facing Climate Change: Islamic Perspective on Climate Change Adaptation" today.
"This MoU combines the two strengths of each organization, namely environmental conservation, and religious approachesand culturalin order to preserve the planet earth that we inhabit," said DR Efransjah, CEO of WWF-Indonesia. DR
DREfransjah added, "We believe that the network of pesantren, schools and other NU organizations will be able to become an important component in our consistent efforts to foster and increase public awareness to preserve Indonesia's environment and biodiversity. Of course, we also hope that the entire NU community will benefit from the joint activities that will be carried out by WWF-Indonesia and NU." WWWF-Indonesia and NU.
"The book launch is a form of NU's attention and seriousness towards environmental issues, disaster management, and climate change, as well as humanitarian issues as an implication of environmental damage. NU has established the Institute for Disaster Management and Climate Change (LPBI NU) as the implementer of NU's policies and programs in this field," explained Prof. Dr. KH. Said Aqil Siroj, MA, Chairman of PBNU.
In its dissemination process, this book can be a reference for kiai, santri, and NU people, in particular, in dealing with the impacts of climate change. Prof. Dr. KH Said Aqil Siroj, MA. emphasized, "In addition to providing an overview of climate change and its impacts, this book will enrich knowledge about how Islam views environmental issues and climate change, as well as a few examples of real action on climate change adaptation." Climate change adaptation.
Tetangconnectedness of climate change adaptation and religious perspective, Ir Avianto Muhtadi, MM, Chairman of LPBI NU, said, "It is not always that the 'religious door' is able to play its role, but at least if the channels of science and collective agreement face obstacles, then the religious approach can be a tool to influence the soul of each individual so as not to damage the environment and instead preserve it. This resilience is all the more needed for societies and ecosystems in the face of erratic climate variability and the increasing likelihood of extreme climate events."

About LPBI NU
Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) is a social and religious organization in Indonesia that was established on January 31, 1926 in Surabaya. In carrying out its activities, NU has 4 (four) societal attitudes, namely tawasuth and i'tidal (moderate and fair attitude), tasamuh (tolerance attitude), tawazun (balanced attitude or harmony of relations), and amar ma'ruf nahi munkar (attitude of inviting good and preventing bad / destructive actions). NU is a potential institution as an agent of social, cultural and policy change in society. The number of NU citizens is recorded at 60 million people spread throughout the country, with various social statuses and professions, such as clerics, teachers, fishermen, farmers, traders, and sitting in government, both serving as executive, legislative, and judicial. The Nahdlatul Ulama Disaster Management and Climate Change Institute (LPBI NU) is structurally an implementing institution for Nahdlatul Ulama policies and programs in the fields of climate change, disaster management, and environmental conservation. The embryo of the birth of LPBI NU was CBDRM-NU (Community Based Disaster Risk Management) in the form of ad hoc under PBNU. Since 2004, CBDRMNU has been a pioneer in disaster risk management, emergencies, and rehabilitation. LPBI NU has developed risk management and disaster management programs, environmental health, climate change adaptation, with the involvement of Schools/Madrassas, Islamic Boarding Schools, and communities. This capacity building and community empowerment program is NU's effort to carry out socio-cultural transformation so that the community and Islamic Boarding School increase their capacity to reduce vulnerability, as an effort to improve the welfare of the community in the region. Based on this, LPBI NU has formulated concepts and strategies by prioritizing its potential through strengthening institutional and community capacity.
