WHY SHOULD THE VOICE OF ENVIRONMENTALISM APPEAR ON YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA?
Sentani, April 24, 2026 - Perhaps, for some people, leftovers left on the plate are considered normal. Foodstuffs that are stored in the refrigerator for a long time and then thrown away are also often considered not something serious. However, behind it all, lies a much bigger environmental problem. As a producer of a dangerous gas, methane, food waste has a 28x stronger ability to heat the earth than carbon dioxide. Of course, in the midst of increasingly hot weather every day, and erratic weather, climate issues are relevant things that really need to be discussed.
On April 24, 2026, in Jayapura City, the spirit of caring for the environment, such as food waste, was realized in a content development training activity with the theme "Ko Bijak Pangan, Ko Save Bumi." The activity involved a community of young people who care about the environment together with interfaith youth, as well as indigenous peoples. The activity was also the result of collaboration with the Jayapura Regency Environment Office, Earth Hour Jayapura, and WWF Indonesia Papua Program. They were present to commemorate the moment of Earth Day which falls on April 22, 2026. They gathered not only to learn about the environment, but also to learn that conveying the message to the public through social media is also an important component in giving the earth room to breathe from climate issues.
For one of the training participants, Boy Kallem, Chairman of the Guardian Hollo Community and one of the indigenous people living in the Cycloop Mountains, environmental issues never stand alone. All are interrelated and affect each other. "Nature is an indigenous heritage that we need to protect and preserve. Protecting nature can be done in many ways. Apart from protecting forests, we can also protect nature by caring about the waste we produce every day, especially food waste which turns out to accelerate the climate crisis if not managed properly, he said. Papua's nature, as well as forests, such as Cycloop is the Land of Mama. It is where life takes its breath.
Once they understood the issue of food waste, the participating young environmentalists were also invited to learn how to develop effective campaign content. They practiced developing a content plan to make it easier to spread the message each month. In today's digital era, social media is a very strategic space to spread environmental messages. However, a strong message does not come out of nowhere. It takes the ability to package information into something close, relevant, and easily understood by the public. Of course, with the help of a one-month content development work paper.

At its core, this training shows that protecting the earth doesn't always have to start with big steps. It could be as simple as putting food on your plate, reducing food waste, and sharing simple educational messages through social media. Because, in the end, protecting the environment is not only the task of the government, organizations, or certain communities, but the shared responsibility of all parties. From a simple post, change might just be in our midst!
