TRAVELOKA SUPPORTS RESPONSIBLE TOURISM IN INDONESIA
Jakarta, November 21, 2019 - Traveloka, Southeast Asia's leading digital-based travel, lifestyle and financial services technology company, today announced its partnership with Indonesia's oldest conservation organization, WWF-Indonesia. The cooperation is a strategic step for the company as a form of social and environmental responsibility, as well as Traveloka's commitment to help realize sustainable tourism through initiatives and programs that focus on three main pillars, namely, environment, socio-culture and economy. The signing of the agreement was also witnessed by the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment of the Republic of Indonesia, as well as the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy of the Republic of Indonesia.
Sufintri Rahayu, Public Relations Director, Traveloka said, "According to the results of a survey conducted by Traveloka, nowadays people really consider choosing products and brands from the reputation they have built. 64% of the total respondents said that companies should lead the change instead of waiting for the government's direction; and the majority of them agreed that companies that only think about themselves and profits will not last long."
"As a company that focuses on Indonesia's tourism industry, Traveloka realizes the importance of the company's role in educating all parties involved in this industry, including the community to care about responsible tourism, which we translate into sustainable CSR activities. This collaboration will encourage Traveloka and its partners to work based on responsible principles, and of course in line with the tourism programs launched by the Government. As a first step, we believe we can leapfrog the stage from mere commitment, to a real educational movement to realize sustainable tourism in Indonesia," added Sufintri.
Lukas Adhyakso, Conservation Director of WWF-Indonesia, revealed, "the visit of domestic and foreign tourists to various tourist destinations in Indonesia is one of the economic drivers and sources of regional and national income. But of course, the enthusiasm for vacationing to and in the territory of Indonesia must be followed by the commitment of all parties to keep paying attention to the preservation of nature and the responsible use of natural resources."
"This partnership is in line with WWF-Indonesia's mission to realize fair and sustainable natural resource governance for the welfare of the Indonesian people. We appreciate Traveloka facilitating its partners to improve their corporate governance, which not only considers economic benefits but also environmental sustainability and social responsibility. Some of the programs in this partnership include the Signing Blue membership program, which is aimed at Traveloka's hotel partners. In addition, in the future, Traveloka users will be able to take concrete action for nature conservation, through MyBabyTree tree planting. Our hope is that all parties will be able to realize responsible and sustainable tourism practices," concluded Lukas.
Traveloka's partnership with WWF-Indonesia includes:
- Signing Blue: Traveloka encourages accommodation partners to join WWF-Indonesia's Signing Blue membership-assessment program. The program is intended to help hotels improve their best practices in environmental conservation, marine biodiversity preservation, and ensuring the empowerment of local communities.
- MyBabyTree: WWF-Indonesia's initiative, as part of a multi-stakeholder effort to protect Indonesia's forests and improve the management of at least 25% of the world's forests to benefit biodiversity and communities. Traveloka invites its users to participate in virtual tree adoption through the redemption of reward points. The adopted trees will be planted in critical lands by community groups assisted by WWF-Indonesia.
- Education on Responsible Tourism: Traveloka and WWF-Indonesia collaborate to run a joint campaign on responsible tourism across Traveloka's communication channels and media networks.
The program resulting from Traveloka's collaboration with WWF-Indonesia is expected to realize sustainable environmentally friendly tourism for the Indonesian tourism sector, be able to encourage the creation of a tourism ecosystem that provides value to the government, tourism businesses, local communities, and tourists themselves, so that tourism 4.0 can be realized as a trend in world tourism development.
