PENGUIN
Did you know that penguins are not only excellent swimmers, but also world-class divers?
Penguins are a type of bird that live mainly in the Southern Hemisphere. Although a type of bird, penguins have flippers instead of wings. They cannot fly and when on land, they walk upright, when in snowy conditions they will glide using their bellies. In the water, they are excellent swimmers and divers and some penguin species can even reach speeds of 15 miles per hour. Their distinctive black and white body color helps them blend in with the environment, making it easier to find food, such as small shrimp, fish, crabs, and squid.
Climate change is a growing concern for the existence of penguins living in Antarctica, namely Emperor penguins and Adelie penguins. Both species are highly dependent on the sea ice for food and for breeding grounds. But the sea ice is disappearing and the penguin population is disappearing with it.
