MAPBIOMAS INDONESIA DATA AND PLATFORM PRACTICAL GUIDE MODULE
Land cover change is one of the key indicators for understanding environmental dynamics, pressures on ecosystems, and their impacts on people's social and economic lives. In Indonesia, the pace of deforestation, expansion of plantations, mining, and infrastructure development demands the availability of data that is open, consistent, and easily accessible to the public. Responding to this need, Mapbiomas Indonesia presents Mapbiomas Landy, a spatial data-based platform that maps land cover changes periodically and transparently.
As a non-profit organization that focuses on natural resource and environmental governance, Auriga Nusantara developed a public guidance module to help the public access and make optimal use of Mapbiomas Landy. This module is designed to bridge the gap between the complexity of geospatial data and the needs of non-technical users, so that land cover change information can be more widely understood and used.
The module provides practical and systematic guidance, from introducing the platform, navigating the map, selecting the analysis area and time span, to reading and understanding the land cover classification. In addition to the technical aspects, the module also emphasizes the importance of understanding the context of the data, including the mapping methodology, limitations of the analysis, and responsible interpretation so that the data is not misused.
Through this module, Auriga Nusantara encourages the use of Mapbiomas Landy by various groups-civil society, journalists, researchers, students, and policy makers-as a tool for environmental monitoring, evidence-based advocacy, research, and more transparent decision making. Public access to land cover change data is not only a matter of information disclosure, but also an important step in strengthening public participation and accountability for natural resource management in Indonesia.
