THE LONG CRY OF THE ORANGUTAN
By: Natalia Trita Agnika
The orangutan is the only great ape in Asia and can only be found on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. The other great apes, gorillas, chimpanzees and bonobos, live in Africa. The presence of orangutans in the wild is very important. In the forest, orangutans help spread plant seeds. After eating a fruit, they excrete the seeds with their feces. The seeds grow quickly after passing through the orangutan's digestive tract. The movement of the orangutan causes the seeds to spread over a wide area. When they fall into fertile soil, the seeds will grow into new trees.
Not only that, orangutans also help the growth of new trees. Through their behavior of breaking tree branches and picking up leaves when feeding or making nests, the top of the tree becomes exposed. This allows sunlight to reach the ground. Small trees will also get sunlight and grow quickly.
One distinctive feature of orangutans, especially males, is the ability to emit a long call or long call. A long call is a sound that is emitted repeatedly and can be heard from a long distance. Adult male orangutans can make long calls. This is because adult male orangutans have large throat pouches that can expand.
The orangutan's long call is very loud and can be heard up to one kilometer away. Male orangutans usually emit a long call to attract females during the mating season. long call..
There is another orangutan sound called "kiss squeak". This sound can be emitted by both male and female orangutans. The sound, which sounds like a loud peck, will be emitted when they are agitated, usually because there are other orangutans or predators or humans trying to approach their territory.
What about the younger orangutans? What kind of sounds do they make? Like human babies, baby orangutans can also cry. Whereas a child orangutan screams while throwing something. Juvenile orangutans are capable of making a long, "grumph"-like sound that can be heard up to 300 meters away in the forest.
Interesting, huh? The long cry will sound beautiful combined with the sounds of other animals in their natural habitat. This means that the orangutan's long cry will continue to be heard if the orangutan has the opportunity to live a long, free life in the forest. Let's make sure orangutans live long lives by becoming ORANGUTAN WARRIOR.
